Hot Dell - D600 or D800 or whatever After this heat problem with the D600, I gave up on Dell laptops. I don't recommend dell laptops to anyone. I have converted to an IBM ThinkPad (now Lenovo ThinkPad) user--I replaced the D600 for a ThinkPad T40p. This is a great machine with it's own little problem, but it doesn't cook my left hand. Log your thoughts about your "Hot Dell" here. BTW, I'm not saying you shouldn't buy Dell machines. I'm only saying that mine was really hot to the point of annoyance, and that I will not buy Dell laptops anymore. What you do with your money is your own business. 1 - Annitte - 8/16/2009 11:31:34 PM I've had nothing but issues since I purchased my dell 1505 Inspiron. in November of 06, It completely crashed on me right ing the middle of working. I'm a student, and its done this a few times. The cursor jumps all over the place, and now the backlight is out! I dont know what the cost is to repair it. 2 - morgan - 7/14/2009 2:16:23 PM you might had just got a bad bath, i love my dell laptop, nd got it at a great price, but i also have the insporion, give it a try, its really a great laptop. 3 - Bob Serra - 5/23/2009 9:31:17 AM I've noticed the heat problem is it the battiries/ will it blow up in someones face? Nice waste of money. Upgrading the BIOS was a real hassle too. A two step process from 6 to 22 to 32, using an ISO image for 22. How does a DIMM slot fail unless the design is flaky to begin with? The other slot works with either DIMM. Maybe Lenovo is the way to go. 8 - bahjah - 7/31/2008 6:35:29 PM can you tell me y my del latitude d800 intel(r) pentium(r) m processor 1700mhz 2.00gb of ram is running at 600mhz please 9 - Rod Kawecki #21 - 7/6/2008 12:08:47 AM Rod...my names Rod Kawecki also listed below you...anyways..go get a CD program called "" PC Beginners ""..if you cant find on through internet e mail me and Ill send you a copy - I have one. Bottom -metallic door which covers memory and mini-pci slots, makes it impossible to use on lap. Main fan makes such a nois while on full speed - and because of heat, this is almost always at full speed. Only way to make it usable, on desk only, is to step P4/2,4G down to half speed and lift backside of computer up with some pencils or sht under backside of laptop. Had already one HDD failure, Hitachi DeathStar 60G/7200, soon probably another one, current HDD also reports high temps... Also body: such a lousy design, that if lifted many times from right/front corner with one hand, it breaks plastic near the HDD led. Whole body is weak for that weight and visibly bends if listed with one hand... Power connector is that famous C-series-crap which breaks after half year of usage... Design of usb & ps/2 on backside of laptop is also flawed - big holes in body, about 2mm space around connectors - which leaves all the support to solder on motherboard - you can guess wether these two are working or are they moving freely around... And thats only usb port, this crappy laptop has. 11 - rod kawecki 53 - 7/4/2008 1:21:47 AM I have a 8500p also...it does power up and the light does work. Besides the usual left palm rest so warm to cause sweating issue, I got another overheating problem with maybe the lcd backlight inverter or something. A year or so ago a small area near the bottom middle of the screen went a bit dim (still visible though) and it was burning hot to touch. Why a small inverter dissipates so much heat at all? I mean it's much hotter than my desk IBM thinkvision 20-inch panel. I'm worried that sooner or later the screen will die of that. My next laptop will not be a dell for sure! 21 - mrs Harval Smith - 11/7/2007 2:52:57 AM i am a specify and registered loan lender, and i give out loan to intrested individual who are dare need of a loan to settle their bills and other expences with rate of 3% intrest. And yes, they all suck. D600’s are REAL hot, w\ no help from Dell. Exploding batteries, I mean WTF!!! Their “on-site” support that you pay out the A$$ for is a joke. And the newest prob that we have had, we have a M60 laptop, they have replaced the MOBO twice, the graphics card once, and the LCD once. After all that, we had to send it in just to find out that they replaced the screen twice in a row. We get the laptop back about 4 days later, and it is still having the same problem!! I AGREE WITH EVERYONE ELSE!!! Dell sucks, I’ll never buy, recommend, or accept a free one for as long as I live. And another thing, since all of our servers are HP’s we are currently in the process of GETTING RID of the Dell’s and replacing them w\ HP nc8230’s. A much better laptop in my opinion. 26 - Erik - 8/24/2007 3:47:39 AM great site! love the comments! had a real good laugh! 27 - Jon Hagen - 8/19/2007 2:54:22 PM Dell 600m: Avoid painful burns by keeping a damp rag on the left palm rest when using the machine. 28 - Jon Hagen - 8/18/2007 7:08:38 AM Dell 600m: Avoid painful burns by keeping a damp rag on the left palm rest when using the machine. 29 - Ramin - 7/31/2007 4:07:31 AM I need a Driver for laptop . Recently I have been noticing numbness in my thighs. This may be a coincidence that the numbness started after I began using the Dell. Does anybody else have a similar experience? 33 - Verity Barnes - 6/19/2007 2:10:37 PM My Dell Inspiron 8600 is also really hot all the time and has an uncontrollable mouse pointer that has a mind of it's own. I don't know what to do to solve it. 34 - Lisa - 5/28/2007 1:06:35 PM My laptop heats up to over 55 degrees Celsius and slows down considerably. I'm not sure if the fan works or if this laptop is "just hot." Cooling pads aren't very helpful. I'm thinking of switching over to something else rather than investing in the time and money to have it fixed. 35 - Jon - 5/10/2007 7:05:47 PM No problem with heat with my D600. I got it from work, original HDD died so they were going to toss it out. I grabbed it and replaced the HDD, upgraded the RAM to 1.5GB and wireless from 802.11b to 802.11g. I even replaced the 1.6GHz Banias with a 1.6GHz Dothan. It works perfect for web browsing use. Does it get a little warm when extensively used? Sure. But it has a tiny little fan in the back of it. What do you expect? I hope you understand the logic of airflow. Laptops are always going to get warm if you want them to be quiet, which is one thing the D600 really is. 36 - bhaiyu - 4/9/2007 11:51:46 AM iu want to make a software now 37 - olari - 3/29/2007 6:25:14 AM i need toshiba A60 satillite pro drivers 38 - Nicolas - 3/26/2007 8:28:01 PM I've had some dell computers and don't think they are as bad as anyone else is saying. It is true some do get hot in some places, bad thing when it comes to palmrests, but I'd say that has happened to me in almost every computer i've tested, regardless the brand. And i've never got burnt, not even near, that's an exageration. And yeah, i think that spyware and viruses soaking up 80% of your processor while you read/type emails may get your computer a little bit hot. 39 - Rahul G - 3/25/2007 6:34:01 PM My laptop (Dell Inspiron600m) is a 2.5 years old machine as well. It heats up normally anyway, and in recent times whenever i would leave it on StandBy, it would get really Very Hot near the palm rests, just under the screen and near the power button. Just this morning i noticed that the laptop bag, a leather carry bag, was all hot before i took it ut of the car to walk down to work with it. Well i just took the laptop out and even though it was switched off, the whole damn thing was scorching hot and there was soem burning smell. I quickly unpluggedt he battery out for al ittle while and let it sit there. Then after a 10 minute break i just tried putting the battery in to see how it was doing and the thing would come up saying !Battery Critically Low! Warning!!! Hit F1 to continue", I just turned it OFF and took the battery pout again and left it to sit outside the bag. Not sure what wnt wrong there, the battery or the mainboard. And its ran out of its warranty as well now. Dunno what to do, am very annoyed....Can someone help? Mail me on rgupta78@tpg.com.au I am prepared to spend a few dollars if required too, but i guess repairing this through DELL will cost me a fortune. ----------------------- 26 - SVEN ROELSE - 7/27/2006 7:34:20 PM ... After my hangups with them dec 2005 - jan 2006 ... In short I wrote this letter ... and said they would fix it for free ... I think I have this document around here somewhere. Any takers? 40 - Kirk - 3/12/2007 1:18:26 PM i have no heat issues with my dell d800. it has always worked fine. i do not really like dell's computers but i truly like their "come to your house and fix your laptop" warranty. i know most overheating problems come from dust. it is actually very very easy to remove my keyboard. doing to allows access to most of the dusty areas. just remove your fan(s) clean them out and blow out the rest of the dust you can see. the problem i had with my laptop was that it just stopped working. after removing a bunch of stuff it was figured to be my motherboard. they came over the next day fixed it and also gave me new plastics so it looks brand new again. 41 - Kathy Richter - 2/4/2007 1:58:45 PM My Dell 5150 Inspiron constantly overheats, the processor can't keep its maximum speed due to heat-related issues and it also shuts down without warning. The fan runs constantly in one speed (is not changing to faster or lower speeds) and it is extremely loud - so loud that I get a headache working on it longer than 1 hour and it is impossible to watch a movie on this machine because the of noise the fan makes (which sounds like a hair dryer). The laptop gets so warm I have by now a brown stain on my computer desk... I have this laptop since 2004 and contacted Dell who did not know anything about it - even though the forum was already filling up with messages about this problem. I gave up contacting support eventually since I was always put on hold for infinity and then kicked out of the line. This was the worst purchase I have ever made.. 42 - bill - 2/3/2007 2:42:39 PM Looking for owners of Dell Latitude C810 to join class action lawsuit for defective motherboards in US . Around that point, the system would lock up due to overheating. 47 - Kinaton - 1/11/2007 8:36:30 PM I have a dell latitude cpx and i have tried to get the nipple and touch pad to work.. with no luck.. Does anyone know where to get drivers for windows xp sp2 48 - Martinez - 1/9/2007 4:02:53 PM I don't have a Dell. I have a "SAGER" notebook computer. It gets warm, but judging from the comments, it doesn't seem to have as bad of a heat problem as your Dell. 49 - Pedro - 1/8/2007 8:07:42 PM Why spend money on a “QuadCooler” when you can make your own laptop cooler from a cardboard box? All you need is a cardboard box the size of your laptop, a utility knife, ruler, marker, and duct tape. STEP 1: draw nice little squares with your ruler and magic marker. STEP 2: cut out the little squares with your box cutter. STEP 3: reinforce the sides with duct tape. STEP 4: enjoy your new laptop cooler! The folks at QUADCOOLER.COM are going to hate me, but I do give them credit for having a pretty decent website and their product does have some advantages over my homemade creation. For example, my homemade laptop cooler doesn't have any fans and it's very hard to pack it into my laptop carrying case. 50 - Mariah - 1/8/2007 5:30:50 PM I have tried several laptop coolers in my day and there are many factors to consider when purchasing. The cooling factor is very important, but many people tend to forget about the usability factor. Laptops were made to be portable, so you need a laptop cooler that is easy to pack along with the laptop. The “Quad Cooler” is a good example. It is light weight and I can actually pack it into my laptop carrying case along with the laptop. I used to have an aluminum laptop cooler and it was heavy not to mention the sharp edges that would tear holes in my back pack. The Quad Cooler is a good product worth looking into. 51 - Mike - 12/19/2006 10:41:39 AM Work D600: Left wrist rest = HOT. Some said beyond annoying, I say damn near dangerous. I use an external keyboard at work and it's quite warm to touch. If I use it at home, it's usually sitting on a pillow on my lap so my legs don't burn. The downside is the heat has nowhere to go and my wrist acts at the heat sink. It's really bad. 52 - Jo Zadak - 12/12/2006 1:03:41 PM response to sb48468. Not talking about underneath! Right next to the touch pad it get's FREAKIN HOT to where I have to suspend it to cool down. Avg. temp is 42c! 53 - Jo Zadak - 12/12/2006 1:01:04 PM I will not buy a DELL. use D600 thru work and left side gets FREAKIN HOT!!!!! Looking into another brand 54 - john 2 - 12/6/2006 7:15:29 PM dell i mean hahaha 55 - john john - 12/6/2006 7:15:01 PM My first Dell, an inspiron 3200 (1998)....great. Second Dell, a Latitude CsX (2001)....even better, the Mercedes of notebooks. My third Dell, an Inspiron 700m (Jan 2005)...decent but disappointing. I'd moan on and on, but suffice to say....dude, I'll never get another Dude. 56 - sb48468 - 12/2/2006 4:54:21 AM Remember there notebooks not laptops, the notebooks wasnt designed to place on the lap for obivious reasons. Hasn't anyone thought when you cover the vent that just maybe the system will get hot? If the system burns you when you touch it, being if it's still under warranty, Dell will replace the entire system. 57 - Reinaldo Torres - 11/27/2006 7:07:46 AM About two months ago a friend bought a Dell CPX. Now, there is problem, it shows a line about 1 inch left of the right edge of the screen. I suspect that a software (game) caused that situation. I wonder if anyone has experienced something similar and knows what is the reason. 58 - Gloria - 11/21/2006 8:01:07 PM I have a Dell Latitude D600 I have to use for work and no matter what I use (cool pad or in elevated mode), it gets extremely HOT I feel a burn sensation on my stomach or thighs and it hurts for hours. I reported it but the Tech people claim they never heard of my issue. They are giving me the run around and trying to "educate" me on how the PC works. I just want the problem fixed. Will replacing the fan work? 59 - Thomas B - 11/15/2006 2:46:21 AM Hi there, We have around 80 D600's and the failure rate of hard drives is massive. Indeed I have some users who's drives have failed more than 4 times in a three year period. All dell do is replace the drive, not much help to a user who is on a customer site about to give a presentation! 60 - Felix Huening - 11/9/2006 6:44:02 AM my dell d600 gets a hot left wristpad, too. the hard disc becomes very hot after a usage of about 1hour. in all other aspects, the notebook is great! 61 - pop - 10/18/2006 1:34:49 PM 5 + 3 = 8 62 - Chris L - 10/4/2006 11:03:20 PM I don't have a heat issue, although my sister does with her her HP, which I think is a z700 or z2700(I can't remember). Anyway, I have a Dell Inspiron 600m and I've had nothing but problems. Of course, it ran okay for the warranty-covered period(other than speed problems, which is expected from its 1.6 Ghz processor), but ever since 2 months ago it's been messing up(of course it would have problems about 4 weeks after the warranty expired). First, the LCD cracked for no reason at all(serioiusly I take good care of it). Next, the crack spread diagonally across the screen, a crack formed paralell to that one, a huge shattered-looking area formed inthe corner, and a bunch of miscellaneous cracks formed to connect them all together. As if that wasn't bad enough, the the shattered part became a 3 in. by 5 in. ink blot, many other ink blots appeared, and the screen fades out in all kinds of places(which can only be cleared by bending the screen). Then, the control key cracked under the "enormous" weight of my pinky finger. The a key(along with many other left-side keys) doesn't work all the time. My cursor likes to jump around A LOT. It stopped recognizing my power supply about 3 hours ago, so I only have about 1.5-2 hours tops left on the battery(the battery is one thing I can't complain about). Now, I believe the inverter is going/went or the Liquid-crystals are just messed up horribly, because about an hour ago almost my entire screen got the vertical lines and horizontal lines(they're the basic monitor colors:Red,Blue, and Green) across a plain black(white in some parts) display. So I'm typing this post in a view that is slightly bigger than the ink blot in the corner. Therefore, you must forgive any mistypes, because I have to keep dragging my resized browser in order to check my spelling. I've been using/dealing with computers since I was four, so I know a decent amount, and I know none of the problems are my fault. I also know a lot of people with Dells and I have yet to meet a satisfied customer. Actually, most technicians, or those that are the equivalent thereof, that I have met, won't deal with Dells, laugh t me because I own one, and seriously frown upon there continued existence as a large retailer of computers. Anyway, a friend of my father's runs a transfer station(or dump if you'd prefer) and he recently noticed someone throwing away an Inspiron 8500, which is pretty much identical to mine, except bigger. According to the Dell forum I found when researching my latest problem, the 8500 can use my power supply. I'm going to try to put my hard drive in it(since, according to my quick overview, that appears to be all that is missing). I'm going to try to get the 8500 running, although I don't have high hopes, since it has a red sticker on the bottom stating that it has been refurbished by "trained Dell technicians." It just sucks becuse I've been using this PC to write my programs in my Computer Science courses at college, and I was suposed to show my professor two of them tomorrow. Well, Wish Me Luck!! 63 - Josh W - 10/2/2006 5:32:39 AM I have a lab with 9 Dells (2 Inspirons, 7 Latitudes), 4 Panasonic Toughbooks, and 2 HPs. Some go into the field while others remain in the lab. I've learned that they all collect dust in their vents and on their heatsinks and eventually overheat reguardless as to where they were used or who manufactured them. I've downloaded all the service manuals and strip and clean them once a year. I also blow them out with canned air whenever I suspect a heat problem. I'm convinced that regular maintenance is the only way around the overheating. And yes, I love the Dells as much as the Toughbooks. 64 - Nese - 8/29/2006 1:40:40 AM I use Latitude D400. This one is also very hot at bottom and I cannot use it on my lap. The worse thing is the ventilation outlet is on the right hand side and the continuous warm air comes directly on my right hand holding the mouse. This is very unconvenient and besides I'm having serious ache on my right hand. 65 - sven roelse - 7/27/2006 7:34:20 PM for all people out there with dell problems. After my hangups with them dec 2005 - jan 2006 i would like you to know that i spend 2 days of my life doing research on all our problems and as a result writing a 12 page word document. In it I expressed my extreme disappointment in their quality of product, poor service, and bad deals. I inserted urls to posts of regular dell flamings and heart braking events. (some one should make a movie about this) My dell had a faulty dimm slot (dimm slot A) and needed a motherboard replacement. that would cost me $AUS 550. Including another hit for $145 (pickup repair and delivery). It was enough to make me very angry. Don't think I have been that angry in my life up to then. In short I wrote this letter, they rang me up within two days, and said they would fix it for free. That's right FREE. a two and a half year machine, not under warranty anymore. Paid 4 grant. Would have paid additional 1100 dollars in total for repairs if they didnt cough up. I think I have this document around here somewhere. Any takers? 66 - Robert Drake - 7/26/2006 10:59:16 AM Great site, "Ithink I'll get a Dell Dude1" 67 - G. Now i try to on my laptp power led and batter led continously blinking for 45 seconds and automatically gone off. I want solution for that. I did't get new power adapter still now. how to work with my laptop. Please help to me if anyone know for this solution. with thanks G.Aruldoss 68 - Kevan - 7/19/2006 9:46:57 PM I posted a while back about my dell d600 being damn hot, well I constantly complained to dell and they replaced my motherboard and ram and hard drive and nothing worked. they were going to do that all over again but I said that was the stupidest thing ever. So since I was still under waranty, they shipped me a spanking new D610 and I returned the shitty d600. Bye bye crap box. I WILL NEVER BUY A DELL COMPUTER EVER AGAIN. Thanks for creating this topic. 69 - Danielle - 7/17/2006 2:30:31 AM More laptop burns? Mine was from an HP compaq, not a Dell. Does anyone know if has been any successful lawsuits for burns against laptop manufacturers? I was exhausted one night and feel asleep on the couch with my laptop on my stomach. I woke up a little over a hour later with my thigh in pain - second and third degree burns (or actually holes in my thigh) from the metal port screw pegs on the back of my HP NC6000 laptop. I've never really had a problem with the bottom being too hot, so I was really suprised by this. Otherwise, I absolutely love the laptop. Thanks. I was wearing jeans at the time and when I realized I was getting burned it was too late. I'm think of getting a class action against Dell on this. My M60 laptop gets even hotter than my D600, if I'm gettin burned its too hot. 72 - jonespiece@gmail.com - 6/29/2006 4:19:13 PM I have alot of money to just give out to anyone that asks for it... By the way I have been looking at your site, and find it to be mostly helpful to me. Please keep up the good work. Thanks,, Kevin Jonespiece 73 - kevin - 6/29/2006 7:25:08 AM Great STIE!!!! 74 - Mike - 6/15/2006 9:38:06 AM Ours are horribly hot, almost unusable. And yes, Dell will not acknowledge the problem in their forums, or offer us any assistance. This is the last time our company will buy Dell laptops. 75 - John - 5/15/2006 8:01:39 AM Keep up good work,You have nice site! Thank you. 76 - barf - 5/10/2006 12:44:08 AM Dont buy a dell laptop! I was given an Inspiron 1100 to repair because it's power connector had melted. I fixed that easy, but the charging and power supply circuit was fried. The pins in the power connector are too small to handle the ~90W of energy it consumes; reeks of design flaws. 77 - Jean - 4/13/2006 7:32:27 PM How to Solve Problem (= get yourself rid of problem, who cares about customer) Note - make sure to log in Customer service system answer given previously so that different answer A/B/C can be given each time customer calls up for steps 1 to 4. 1) Question: whatever Answer A: Format HD & reinstall system. Justification: Software problem, not Dell problem. Answer B: update BIOS to latest version. Justification: blabla update, incompatibility problems have been adressed now. Answer C: update Driver for [whatever the problem can be related to] to latest version. Justification: blabla update, incompatibility problems have been adressed now. Comment: takes 95% of problems away, as customer doesn't have CD's or doesn't know how or messes up & ends-up with multiple bugs among out of date drivers & versions which definitely compromise the operation of its system => now he really has software /system / HW problems. When computer doesn't boot up anymore, it's definitely a software/BIOS/driver problem so, You were right. Customer looses. If he comes back - X weeks later: 2) Question: still doesn't work. stick with the letter indicated in Customer service system. Answer A: update Driver for [whatever the problem can be related to] to latest version. Justification: blabla update, incompatibility problems have been adressed now. Answer B: Format HD & reinstall system. Justification: Software problem, not Dell problem. Answer C: update BIOS to latest version. Justification: blabla update, incompatibility problems have been adressed now. Comment: same as § 1. If he comes back - X weeks later: 3) Question: still doesn't work. stick with the letter indicated in Customer service system. Answer A: update BIOS to latest version. Justification: blabla update, incompatibility problems have been adressed now. Answer B: update Driver for [whatever the problem can be related to] to latest version. Justification: blabla update, incompatibility problems have been adressed now. Answer C: Format HD & reinstall system. Justification: Software problem, not Dell problem. Comment: same as § 2. If he comes back - X weeks later: 4) Question: still doesn't work. Answer: do it again [go back to §1]. Comment: D(h)ell this one's tough, but you'll tire him out. If he comes back - X weeks later: 5) Question: still doesn't work. Answer: change motherboard Justification: maybe a component has failed. Comment: if computer is out of warranty, try to charge 300 bucks for a diagnostic prior to ordering the parts valued at 1000 bucks - that should get rid of the customer problem. If computer is under warranty give no assurance as to when computer is coming back. Require to leave the HD inside the computer and imply lightly that it may get lost or wiped out or changed (=wiped out). Note to local subcontractor - when computers come, just swap motherboards around and send back. 6) Question: still doesn't work. Hey that guy is still around - don't he understand? Answer: whatever, you've done your best. Comment: send to lawyers - they'll write the sh-it. Conclusion - you've taken care of 100 cases: 99,9 solved & 0,1 lost. Congratulations. 78 - shamim - 4/13/2006 6:57:51 AM my note book A-60 toshiba satellite sound card driver is missed 79 - Damien - 4/7/2006 6:35:21 PM i have a dell inspiron 1505 and the keyboard doesn't work so now dell is sending me a new one i want to fix the one i have so i can use the other one for a back up but im not sure on how to fix it. it might be a hard drive problem or a small wire. in any case im not impressed 80 - Susan Anderheggen - 4/1/2006 10:20:29 AM I have a Dell Inspiron laptop - has had problems since day 1 - but now shutting itself off because too hot. Also - similarly to don2air below, the fan is so loud, it drowns out a quiet room. 81 - Olivier Coutu - 3/30/2006 9:05:41 PM I find that the processor of my inspiron 5150 cannot keep its maximum speed due to heat-related issues. I would like that to change. 82 - DH - 3/29/2006 8:13:22 PM Dell 5150 inspiron constantly overheats and shuts down without warning. The continuous rattle makes it almost impossible to think! agggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh! 87 - Ian Doyle - 3/12/2006 3:39:58 PM I have the heat issue with a Dell 8600. They have replaced the motherboard, hard drive, palm rest, battery but I am still no closer to having a comfortable unti to use. I believe it is also causing a problem with my arm as I have contracted bursitus (that I have never had before)Even taking out the battery and running on power only (as suggested by a Dell tech) has not worked. As I have only one month warranty left, I am trying all avenues to get it sorted. Having said all this, the Dell support so far has been excellent 88 - Kelly Davis - 3/9/2006 9:55:36 AM The heat made the hard drive fail, and Dell would not replace it!!! 89 - CS Soon - 3/8/2006 7:49:22 AM D800 with left palm rest heat problem. It is a design fault ! D810 does not have this problem at all coz the HDD is not below the palm rest. Called DELL, asked me to run Diagnostic test to confirm no problem with Fans. Nothing they can do about it. It is now hurting my left wrist. 90 - G Wu - 3/7/2006 8:58:32 AM I bought Inspiron 5160 in 10/2004. In the first year, the laptop was sent back twice for DC power jack problem. They replaced motherboard. Now the warrenty is over, the same problem comes back again, I called Dell, they refused to repair it as a ongoing problem. I find many people complain the same problem. We should do something let Dell to fix the problem. 91 - G Wu - 3/7/2006 8:58:08 AM I bought Inspiron 5160 in 10/2004. In the first year, the laptop was sent back twice for DC power jack problem. NOT.. IT was still overheating, and the speedstep was not kicking in as it should to lower the voltage of the CPU, causing the bottom to get as hot as firecracker. I completely disasembled the laptop after first recieving it, to use sompressed air and a soft toothbrush to completely clean the inside. apparently that was enough. even with a cooling pad, the i8kfangui, still shows the CPU running at a constant 120 farenheit or hotter..never buy a dell again..no matter how sweet the deal looks.. 93 - Kurt - 2/28/2006 11:37:32 AM I work for a charter school. We recieved 16 laptop Dells via a donation. They are mostly PII 400's with a few PIII 500's. The PII's all refurbished fine. However two of the 5 PIII's had an overheating problem that precluded them from use. They show all the same symptoms that have been listed in this forum. It really is a shame, because they fully reburbished otherwise. I found this forum by Googling the words "Latitude CPx H Freezes boot". One would think that Dell would do this sort of search as a way to quality control it's product lines. I used to recommend Dell carte blanc, however, I am inclined to recommend IMB in light of the information contained in this forum combined with the recent experience with the donated laptops. 94 - Beau Frazer - 2/28/2006 3:03:55 AM My inspiron 1150 gets really hot and the hard drive stops. The only way I can continue to run is to put the notebook on its side!! Im starting to get a really sore neck! I dont think the fan is speeding up when required. When I first bought the computer the rubber pads on the bottom fell off, and i rang Dell to get them replaced as it was still under warranty. My reasoning was that the computer was already getting hot and I didn't want to fry anything due to poor ventilation. They refused to honor the warranty as the "Plastic" components weren't covered by the warrany 95 - karen varney - 2/27/2006 10:50:04 PM I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 and it gets really hot and has power issues with the AC adaptor. I have a two year warranty (except the warranty on the battery ran out after one year)and Dell is telling me the heat problem is from the battery. Right. I'm extremely dissatisfied with their customer service, and I too plan on buying an IBM next time. 96 - Mirtha Milian - 2/23/2006 11:44:19 PM My INSPIRON 1150 is probably the worst computer I have ever bought. After the one year warranty expired, it began to overheat and shut down. I will never purchase any Dell products again. I think a class action suit should be in the works soon. Hopefully legal discovery will cover all the cosumers who bought this 2nd rate product. 97 - Anonymous - 2/19/2006 9:16:23 PM p.s. i've been working in the pc field, including some major co's for 21 years, and never personally saw anything like this. And yes, hot it does get, Dell 5150, just perusing the net to research what others have found about Dell with these similar issues. 98 - Anonymous - 2/19/2006 9:12:33 PM Anonymous cuz i can't reply to emails and such, I just read the poor chaps account below how his dell would only start if he raised the left side. I am having problems with the one in front of me, first it would just shut down installing XP, now it won't recognize the DVD/CD drive. I lifted up the left side, booted, and now it recognized it. If I just didn't have it happen to me, I wouldn't of believed it. Next time I have car trouble I'm just gonna kick the tires. 99 - steven alcala - 2/15/2006 1:46:50 AM i have a dell latitude d800 with the same left hot hand problem i have contacted dell and they said its normal i doubt that. 100 - Ruben Gutierrez - 2/14/2006 4:38:48 PM Well, I don't have the D600, but I do have an Inspiron 1150, like so many others in this forum. Within the past few months, my laptop began shutting down due to overheating. I'd elevate the rear side of the computer, and then it would be fine. Now it won't boot correctly. I thought it was a hard drive issue because I removed the hard drive and it actually booted until it found the hard drive was missing. I tried booting to a CD, and it crapped out again. Something bizarre to note is that if I tilt the machine on it's right side, it boots normally. I'm think there's a loose power connection internally. I don't think I'll buy a Dell again, but it would be nice if I could get my current Dell fixed. 101 - Martin Fincham - 2/12/2006 5:29:35 PM Mine gets hot as well and then locks up. 102 - Hot Sauce - 2/9/2006 4:05:25 PM I have a Dell Latitude c810 , with 512mb of ram works great and two fans make it noisey for 1 minute every 2 hours but yah at night i just flip it upside down and its fine so quite leave it on 24/7 : ) Not a problem yet ! I love my dell on ubuntu linux :) 103 - Karen - 1/30/2006 6:01:47 PM My dell used to overheat then crash, but it doesn't overheat anymore. This solution has worked for me, and may help some people who have opened their laptops and still have the same problem. My Inspiron overheated since the CPU had to do a lot of extra work to find the extra memory on my hard drive that it needed to run programs. It could not run VS 2003 without overheating, then crashing. So, I increased the amount of virtual memory availiable until it had no overheating problems. Here's how to increase the virtual memory under WinXP Professional. It may or may not work on Home edition. Goto Control Panel -> System. Click on the 'Advanced' tab, and go to Performance -> Settings. Under the Visual Effects, select 'adjust to best performance'. Go to the Advanced tab. Under the advanced tab there's a section called 'Virtual Memory.' Under virual memory, select 'Change.' A new window called Virtual Memory will appear. Select custom size. Increase the minimum and maximum values depending upon how much space you have on your hard drive. For example, I set the minimum to 3000 mb, and the maximum to 4000mb. Before, I only had 384 mb of hard disk space available for memory. Now my programs run much faster, w/o overheating my laptop. 104 - JT - 1/30/2006 9:37:08 AM I have a Dell Inspiron 8500. When I bought it, it was the most expensive one they had. Well now I know paying big bucks doesn't mean anything. The battery died about a year after buying it. And it gets really hot! There is no way I can set it on my lap and I use an external keyboard as even the keys get hot. The fan or the laptop itself is noisy. And more recently my DVD burner is shot. I can't listen to cd's anymore it just keeps saying there is no cd in the drive. When I try to play a cd it makes a clunking noise. sigh. When I watch a DVD half the time the movie is jerky which is annoying. I could pay money to get a new battery and a new DVD drive but I've decided to buy a new laptop, I don't want to wait and find out what goes next on this laptop. I will never buy another Dell, that's for sure. 105 - rhythum nischal kumar - 1/27/2006 8:44:35 PM hi my dell c640 turns off automatically....sometimes never boots up as well...its heat non doubt...so screw dell... 106 - Ian Doyle - 1/27/2006 4:51:58 PM I have a Dell 8600 that is unusable due to the heat. 107 - Andrew Shin - 1/27/2006 3:08:38 AM My CPU regularly reaches up to 90 Celcius when playing games, causing the computer the start locking up. This also happens during any intensive process, such as defragmenting, harddisk cleanup, etc. 108 - Kamalesh Thakker - 1/25/2006 7:07:36 PM Have Dell Latitude C640...way too hot on lap without a book or something else to insulate. New battery died in 2 months...and not booting with two batteries plugged in now. 109 - sven roelse - 1/21/2006 2:09:16 AM owner of dell 5150 3.06GHz MP4 (NO HT) 512mb 40gb 64mb ati m9000 1600x1200. Bought july 03. Had battery probs about 16months later. Would only last 20min on battery. Read somewhere in the fineprints that li-on batteries die slowly end especially after 500 charge/discharge cycles. I had been ABSOLUTELY sure that up to that point no way in the world the machine had been operating on batteries for more than 500 cycles. I almost always had it stuck to the wall. Someone then kindly told me that even when its connected to the mains, current flows through the batteries and that they are slowly degrading. What is the point of batteries then? Also on that day POST was slow. BIOS informed me video card memory was 32mb. This happened on the day i flashed the bios to a newer version.(yes connected to the mains!) Display became corrupted too. Jagged vertical edges. Called dell. Was very angry. Expressed my disappointment for this machine and their poor quality of products. Up to then had been very good. Had to pay 145 dollars for pick up, for them to have a look at the machine and then deliver it back to me in the original state.Had to await report. Told me my video card was brokenand confirmed that my 12 months warranty had expired. Had to pay 275 dollars to replace it. After i payed they send out the new video card. Few days later a repairman came round and replaced the card in 20 seconds flat. 16months - 400 Australian dollars - a lot of disbelief and frustration. However i had told them i would only pay for the video card. It was my main priority - i could not see the screen - it had died the day after completely. I could wait before i had the money to buy a new battery. To my surprise that battery lasted about 3 and a half hours! I am reading the dell forums and one guy had his ATI M9000 card replaced for FREE. now it's jan 06. POST last week (progress bar on boot-up, Power On Self Test) informed me system memory had changed. Strange I thought. I pressed f2 and there it was 256mb. What the ***k? Rang dell. Sorry don't have those memory sticks anymore. We do have a faster one that is a 512mb module. Is that what you are after? No thanks. I hung up feeling completely misunderstood, not to mention the attempt to get me to buy better and more expensive parts insulting. (why can't they sell spare parts at cost price?) Now I am in for another pickup-check-delivery fee of 145 dollars and possibly another dimm module or even motherboard replacement. I don't want to pay, but who else can I turn to? Reading the forums, I am now aware of design flaws, overheating problems and dust build up, as well as other issues such as the broadcom nic. On closer inpection there does seem to be a bit of dust clinging to the ducts, but I had thought that that would be normal. Anything accumulates dust over time, escpecially computers. But I've never wondered how it would look like on the inside, where it matters. I am extremely dissappointed. Very tempted, also, to use all sorts of expletives to vent my anger at people with english as a second language who I can barely understand and seem hell-bent on selling you the world instead of fixing it for you. I paid nearly four grand on this machine. Doing the maths and seeing what two grand gets you these days, it's dishartening. I thought of selling it. I thought of selling it for 1500 dollars and buy something better. Something not DELL. I thought of passing on all these problems and future worries to somebody else. I decided it's not worth it. And yet, Here is a company that: - cuts out the middleman and claims to offer better deals > CRAP. I want face to face and better service. - that sells millions of machines worldwide..... > and can't afford to sell spare parts at cost price. I was quoted AUS$234,50 for 512mb module. Surely not cost price? I can buy it cheaper in the local dick smiths store! - That operates cheap call-centres. Because when we ring and they answer we feel instantly relieved because this matter is going to be solved, yet we get nothing out of it. I should stop right here.... sven 110 - Gerry Tubritt - 1/7/2006 5:31:09 PM Hello Jose, I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 that gets really hot but also very frustratingly loses power without warning. I've had the laptop for a few years and while still in warranty I sent it back to the supplier to havethe problem rectified. They replaced the motherboard. Recently I had to replace the power cable (crap design)and the problem has reemerged with the use of the new cable. Any advice would be appreciated. Regards Gerry Tubritt 111 - Laurie DuPre - 1/2/2006 9:20:14 AM I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 and it BURNS our legs!!! My children cannot hold it on their laps. In fact, it gets so freakin' hot it shuts itself down! I've used other Dell laptops and don't recall having this issue. I've also heard that Dell power cords for the laptops have been known to guess what? CATCH ON FIRE. Hmmmmm, how can Dell say they don't have a problem with their laptops overheating???????? 112 - unknown - 1/1/2006 11:25:19 AM Free replacement of the 30 ( and sometimes 40 gb ) drives wasn't a problem in Europe.I forgot to tell Dell has withdrawn the D600 model of the market. It is officialy a crappy machine. It has been replaced by the D610. Please note that this is not a revision of the D600. D610 is a completely different machine. 113 - unknown - 1/1/2006 11:20:05 AM The first series of D600 had a bad series of 30 gb harddisks that become so hot that they tighten up in their cradles. Sometimes removal is difficult. The replacement drives of the same type ( but also 5400 rpm ones ) do not have that problem. Affected machines were sold end of 2003, beginning of 2004. Even worse is the Bluetooth problem in the D600. The connector will break off the mainboard because of torsion when lifting up the machine. Only remedy is having the mainboard replaced. 114 - Gabriel Elias - 12/30/2005 4:11:39 PM Same thing with 1100 Inspiron. The hard drive melted. I lost it all. Go for a Turion processor. AMD has its act together. 115 - Clive baker - 12/26/2005 9:52:43 AM Hi I own an dell insporion 5160 , it gets so hot that cpu temperature reaches 76C easily, and HD temp around 50C. I read on dell fourum site that I have to clean the heat sink. I am going to buy compressed air today and also find someone to open it and clean it. It is very disappointing , I am seeing much slowdown in games, and cpu speed becoming 1/2 116 - TB - 12/22/2005 12:04:03 AM I have a 5100 that also gets hot. It use to shut down right in the middle of working when it was fairly new, very frustrating. But I was able to fix the problem. I periodically on a regular basis use the compressed air and spray into the fan area, etc. and it does not do this anymore, two years later. 117 - Keith W. - 12/20/2005 8:42:50 PM Yep same problem, installed speedFan and it shows that the Hard Disk is running most of the time at 51 degrees C. Difficult to work with that temp on your left hand! 118 - Şafak ŞEKER - 12/18/2005 4:06:49 PM My Dell D600 notebook gets hot on the left side. If DELL does not solve this problem or give our moneys back, I will try to inform everyone in Turkey. To DELL, please Do stop selling this notebook 119 - Kevan - 12/17/2005 11:19:19 AM I got a D600 and I have been having the same burning sensation in my left wrist as mentioned by others here. The bottom of my computer is hoter than Hell and I don't dare place it on my lap. I have almost dropped my computer when holding it because it burning my hand. I think it is insane that Dell has not come forth and offered to help fix the problem in some way. When they don't do anything, it makes Dell look like they don't care about their customers. I am going into my third year on waranty and I am fed up. Since I am still on waranty I am gonna get them to do something. 120 - Harold Davis - 12/16/2005 12:07:00 PM I bought a Dell Inspiron 1150 in August of '04. Starting a few months ago it overheats consistently, and out of the blue it just shuts off. I disassembled the fan and heatsink and vaccuumed them out. When I put the thing back together the computer now won't even turn on. It powers up but the processor light doesn't flash and the screen is not on either. Can anyone tell me what is wrong or what I can do? My warranty already ran otu and i don't want to give more money to Dell because they are SOB's. 121 - gp - 12/15/2005 6:50:06 PM had an 1150 get completely fried due to the heat. i tried to get dell to pay for the repairs, even though it was out of warranty. they put me through hours of incompetent customer "service" representatives reading me the same script. i will never buy a dell again 122 - Jose Sandoval - 12/7/2005 8:02:54 PM I did deal with it...I don't use Dells anymore :) 123 - ?DoesItReallyMatter? - 12/5/2005 3:49:10 PM quoting "I don't think it needs to go as far as class action law suit, like some Apple users have done." Then shutup and deal with your crap computer. 124 - ?DoesItReallyMatter? - 12/5/2005 3:48:58 PM quoting "I don't think it needs to go as far as class action law suit, like some Apple users have done." Then shutup and deal with your crap computer. 125 - Jorge Ayala - 12/5/2005 9:51:08 AM Latitude D600 is too hot, i'm very disapointed with this computer, the worst part is DELL, because they know about this problem but they do nothing, they're trying to ignore just to past up the warranty end...is not exist a consumer deffence for this?...and why DELL don't want to save his image?...this computer is toooooooooooooooooooooo bad. 126 - Jorge Ayala - 12/5/2005 9:50:52 AM Latitude D600 is too hot, i'm very disapointed with this computer, the worst part is DELL, because they know about this problem but they do nothing, they're trying to ignore just to past up the warranty end...is not exist a consumer deffence for this?...and why DELL don't want to save his image?...this computer is toooooooooooooooooooooo bad. 127 - William - 12/3/2005 7:19:58 PM I purchased a Dell Inspiron 1150 about a year ago. It always ran hot. Finally, it started shutting down on me in the middle of work. Then it started taken quite some time to get it to come back on. Finally, it got to the point where 1 out of 10 times, would it actually come. Once on, it would go off if I rested my wrist on the area right above the CDROM. I started to research the issue, and found hundreds and perhaps thousdands of consumers with the same issue. Apparently, the issue is that the motherboard makes contact with the protective shielding, any time you rest your wrist right above the CDROM. It usually takes months for the CDROM to become worn enough to make this happen. It got to the point where I finally had to send it to Dell for repair. I was greatly suprised when they said they would fix it for free. After sending it in, I checked back to discover that they wanted to charge me $438 for the repair. Over the course of three days I had it out with everyone who answered the phone. No amount of proof showing that I was told it would be free convinced them. (I do have everything recorded) All of a sudden, they claimed spillage on the motherboard. I asked them what they spilled and they denied it of course. I was however, able to get the manager of their Repair Department on tape saying that the Insprion 1150 has a known defect, but he still wouldn't fix it for free. I encourage everyone with a similar problem to contact the Better Business Bureau and the Texas Attorney General's Office. My position is that Dell sold a laptop with a known defect and that is criminal. 128 - John again - 12/3/2005 5:00:52 AM I even bought a laptop cooling pad, but that hasn't helped. My Inspiron 5100 used to shut down from the overheating too. If I ever left the lid down it would shut down. I had the shut-down-when-you-close-the-lid-option turned off. It doesn't do that any more. I think it was partly b/c the room it was in was much warmer than the one I live in now. 129 - John Hsieh - 12/3/2005 4:57:12 AM I have a dell inspiron 5100 and it gets pretty hot. The fan gets really noisy and runs very often and the system performance lags when I play games, videos, or even just browse my harddrive. It is really annoying. I was just trying to watch a video, but the video kept on lagging. 130 - Harford Ellis - 12/2/2005 5:35:32 AM My CPX fan did not work well from the beginning and now it does not work at all. It was always too hot to hold on my lap. 131 - Vijay - 11/29/2005 5:40:25 PM Yes Dell is too Hot. I have a dell 500M(1+year old) and it works sometimes. I have a peculiar issue with this one, my laptop LEDs will just blink when I press the power on button and will go down immediatly. I thought its something to do with hardware issue. But for no reason my laptop will work sometimes. I relised that my laptop works when the temperature is very low and even doesnt work in the room temperature. You know what I do to boot my PC. I may look crazy but I use to cover my laptop with a plastic bag and keep it in the Refrigerator for 5 - 10 mins after that it will power on happily. One of my friend does the same for his over heating dell 5100 laptop. 132 - Daniel Perky - 11/28/2005 7:14:55 PM Dell 600 M purchased June, 2004. Motherboard replaced jan 2005. Out again Nov. 2005. "Out of Warranty" I believe problem is in fan control software. Before burn out I did diagnostics which showed fan functioning properly. i am now going to deal with ustomer service. Anyone know of any class action litigation on this? 133 - Alex - 11/27/2005 8:19:58 PM My Inspiron 5100 would overheat and shut itself off--it's stopped now that I cleaned the vents with compressed air and installed i8kFanGui, but I still have to keep an eye on the temperature and manually turn on the fans every 15 minutes or so. 134 - Mark Chekhanovskiy - 11/24/2005 5:33:34 PM I have inspiron 5150 it gets hot as well moreover its fan is very noisy 135 - Dave - 11/18/2005 7:17:21 PM Sir can i use the inspiron driver downloads in installing my drivers for d600 latitude PP05L? if not where can i find it i have a problem with my pcmcia, ethernet and my modem i haven't find the right driver for it yet. 136 - Simon H - 11/18/2005 5:37:16 PM I seem to have the progrom 18kfangui on my dell cpx but id doesn't work at ant temp. do you know whare I could get a driver? 137 - Catherine Turner Bismuth - 11/17/2005 10:43:41 AM I am looking for some sort of a shield device. My Dell is sort of permanently attached to my brain, but the platform is so hot that I am having problems with the lymph nodes in my wrists as a result of continuous exposure to the heat source. Thanks for creating a forum for this! 138 - DavidB - 11/16/2005 6:48:51 PM I bought a Dell Latitude C640 2.0 Ghz laptop and it was nice for awhile. Now the fan spins at a constant pace and does not spin faster when needed, only one speed, but it works? Now after 45 minutes the screen garbage starts up and eventually locks up. The fan works but I noticed it no longer spins faster when needed? DELL SUCKS, I HATE THEM WITH A PASSION NOW. 139 - CL Baker - 11/13/2005 4:20:05 PM I have a Dell Latitude CPx. The little fan in rear corner dosen't seem to work. I was told that it only comes on when it needs to. Is this true? Ant... yes the left hand side gets a little overly warm when I use the computer for a while. 140 - CL Baker - 11/13/2005 3:29:25 PM I have a Dell Latitude CPx. The little fan in rear corner dosen't seem to work. I was told that it only comes on when it needs to. Is this true? Ant... yes the left hand side gets a little overly warm when I use the computer for a while. 141 - Chris - 11/12/2005 1:51:55 PM The most annoying part is the fact that the processor speed steps down when the processor is hot (practically all the time), so I end up having a 200mhz processor instead of a 2 ghz. 142 - kenneth cadmus - 11/11/2005 6:19:25 PM 600m.....laggs like crazy after 10-15 of game play....resumes maybe 5 minutes later....then repeats all over again....have tried everything 143 - Amy D - 11/10/2005 9:15:45 AM I use a D600 for work, and my left hand is usually on fire. It stinks. I've noticed the extra fan action on PDF's also. 144 - Robert Mattravers - 11/10/2005 7:15:13 AM Another warm handed D600 owner, happy frying his nuts off while playing games. At least its saving me on my heating bills. And id like to meet the genius that up the audio lines right next to the noise of the hdd. I just wish Dell would at least recall a faulty product, or replace! thats just annoying! 145 - Bob Dodds - 11/9/2005 12:40:54 PM Inspiron 5160: Fan always seems to be running on high which impairs performance, not to mention machine now won't go into standby mode. It also runs hot. Maybe it needs cleaning inside (dust build-up), not sure. 146 - Michelle P - 11/9/2005 12:05:49 PM I am at work and finally had the thought to do some research on this. My left wrist gets so hot it starts to hurt half the time. Thanks! Michelle 147 - Carole - 11/7/2005 3:53:37 PM My new 600m is also warm on the left side (even with a cooling fan pad) but I'm experiencing another problem - the ac adaptor burned out after about 4 months. Research online indicates that there can be mismatch in the power requirement of the adaptor and the system. My ac adaptor has an amperage of 3.34 which i'm told translates to 65 watts; label on the bottom of the computer states for use with 4.62A translates to 90W; ac is not supplying enough power to the laptop. Dell refuses to acknowledge that their documentation is wrong and they are not shipping the correct parts with new systems. 148 - anindo - 10/31/2005 2:39:39 PM Latitude D400. Extremely hot on the bottom. Unable to keep on my lap and work unless I put something in between. The vent is on right for D400 and hence very hot on the right too. Offcourse the heat builds up with certain software which makes the CPU work harder. However u dont have to use games - A simple example is MS Money. With temperature rising and the fan working hard for sometime, the system freezes occassionally. 149 - Stephen - 10/27/2005 8:55:13 AM I've found that the hdd is getting so hot that its causing the sound card to malfunction. 150 - Dorrie Fellows - 10/26/2005 6:43:58 AM I recently purchased a toshiba satillite after having the same problem with my Dell inspiron 5100. This machine will run for hours, without getting hot. I did not purchase another dell because I had to replace the Moniter, Modem and hard drive within 2 years of ownership. 151 - Azuma Hazuki - 10/26/2005 3:51:40 AM I just got a 600m today and the heat is making me nervous. Is it supposed to hit 70 degrees centigrade under load? This machine replaced my old faithful 500m, which idled at 32 and never once went above 62 in the 2+ years I had it. What's happening? 152 - ümit kurtça - 10/25/2005 1:09:03 PM The solution: One TITAN notebook fan(palce it to the bottom)~25$.........nearly 10-15 celcius lower than before...try it 153 - Becky Fox - 10/24/2005 9:47:55 PM Another victim!! HOT HOT HOT and so is the power cord! I use a thinkpad for work and have never had this issue. 154 - Jay Keegan - 10/22/2005 10:24:08 AM I recently had the same problem with the D600. Now I own the D610, and I get the blue screen of death all of the time. 155 - Sean - 10/22/2005 1:35:54 AM I own a D600 and I must say that the heat problem really drives me nuts. I place it on my lap sometimes and the bottom of the laptop, specifically the RAM gets so hot that I think you could literally fry an egg on it. If it wasnt a company laptop, I would never use this POS. 156 - Michael - 10/19/2005 1:21:05 AM My D800 has been burning my left hand from the very first day. I upped the memory (1gig), as I read this could help the drive/heat issue. No Dice!@ I hate that pc! 157 - Wyl - 10/13/2005 7:45:01 AM My D600 has some heat issues as well, which is very annoying, since that is how my C640 bit the dust. I don't know what they're doing over at Dell, but there are issues with their products that are going to drive others away in droves. 158 - Jose Sandoval - 10/11/2005 10:51:43 AM Eric said "I own a Dell inspiron 8100." Eric, there is no issue with the old Inspiron models - And I never said anything about older Inspiron machines - The design flaws are with the NEW Latitude D series (As per my experience). 159 - Eric - 10/8/2005 12:02:34 PM I own a Dell inspiron 8100. It does not get hot at all. One thing I noticed nobody talks about is setting your power mode to "MAX BATTERY". If you dont do this, your notebook will get hot and the fan will go on all the time. Setting the Power setting to MAX BATTERY keeps my Dell running cool. 160 - John - 10/4/2005 9:10:30 PM I agree, we paid enough money for them to have contructed a sutible laptop. I also returned two HP ZD laptops for the same reason, but the HP got hot on the right side of the palm rest. 161 - Shad - 10/4/2005 8:16:49 AM I had a dell 5100 for a year, and a dell 5150 for several months, and my left thigh has burn scars on it. 162 - Jim Jones - 10/3/2005 5:16:49 PM left hand 2nd degree burn victim 163 - Devon Diaz - 10/2/2005 11:56:21 AM This thing keeps getting slower. It is HOT HOT HOT! I back up the hard drive every other day just because I am waiting for the inevitable. There is no way this thing is going to last another month. If it does, I will be very surprised. I hope it is covered under my warrantee 164 - Timothy Ganter - 9/29/2005 11:38:10 PM I have a Inspiron 600m and the area to the left of the touchpad has always gotten *very* hot. Very uncomfortable, especially on the wrist joint while typing. I often type with my left hand lifted off the surface of the laptop to avoid the temperature. 165 - Jonathan Aurand - 9/29/2005 9:08:39 PM My Inspiron 5100 gets really hot. After flashing up the BIOS from A06 to A32, it shuts down because of the heat problem. When I tried to go back, it wouldn't flash down past A22, because apparently Dell decided to start writing their own BIOS at this point instead of buying them from Phoenix. 166 - Guillermo - 9/29/2005 4:54:59 AM Yep, I do have a D600 (for work) and in a year no problems (always a little too hot, but working ok), but these last days I've had 2 blue screens when using too much CPU... A solution that my ITS has recently given to me is to downgrade BIOS version to A06, because the memory gets up to 140ºF and BIOS slows clock cicles, so maybe we can avoid these annoying hangups... Who knows, we can try to see if it works. :-/ 167 - Ümit Kurtça - 9/26/2005 11:32:48 AM nearly two years.thanks dell.. Jose Sandoval (jose@josesandoval.com) - 12/3/2003 8:48:07 AM My Dell Latitude D600 gets way too hot on the left side of the palm rest. Can Dell engineers fix this BIG problem? Or at least officially acknowledge it. Sign the book and as soon as I have around 1000 legitimate entries, I'll pass it to Michael Dell (He's known to listen to his customers). 168 - Ümit Kurtça - 9/26/2005 11:30:16 AM Let's copy this page (all!) and send to Dell...unfortunately this notebook(d505) can not be used as desktop comp...I chosed centrino processor since it is not have a heating problem :) 169 - Shaun - 9/24/2005 2:30:26 PM I have an Inspiron 5100 and its a big piece of shit. Never buying a Dell ever again. I got it just over 2 years ago and already the fan has gone twice and now the CD/DVD Combo drive doesn't read anything. The Dell support is the shittiest support line ever. I've called them so many times that I can't count that high. Now they are saying that its my fault that i can't get my computer fixed, they say that I should have bought the extended warranty, meaning that they now something is going to go wrong with it. Dell is SHIT....That's all I have to say. 170 - Peter - 9/22/2005 2:58:06 PM 600m, very hot. warms my left hand during winter season, but annoying during summer. Also cannot play games for over 15mins due to heat issues. 171 - Duane VanderHyden - 9/22/2005 11:33:00 AM Insprion 600m- dissapointed with the cooling system. Runs very hot Slows my FPS to low single digits. During winter it is a great heating source. 172 - Justin Brooks - 9/20/2005 6:03:29 AM I have a D600 and no problems with heat on the left side. just a question, what speed (RPM) is your hdd. mine came with a slightly slow 4200rpm drive. and no heat. the hdd is directly under the left side of the palm rest. if yours is faster than 4200rpm, maybe that is the issue 173 - Victoria Henderson - 9/19/2005 8:35:11 AM I also own a HOT 5160. The motherboard was replaced twice within 30 days and now I have a bad processor. I used to recommend Dell - even professionally...no more. 174 - Arthur - 9/12/2005 10:04:45 PM So... looks like the Dell 600M and other laptops were designed to be used in a freezer. Seriously, the bottom of the machine is hot, and the fan is blowing out cool air... Is there even a vent around the memory or graphics areas? What's the point of putting fast technology in a machine if you can't use it for more than a couple minutes... I got this for school. Don't ask me why I didn't choose an IBM, ACER, or ABS... 175 - Naum Shamilov - 9/7/2005 9:12:05 PM I own a 5160 that gets HOT 176 - Montgomery Gabrys - 9/6/2005 4:49:21 PM Del Latitude D505 - left palm rest - cooking my hand. 177 - Laura - 9/5/2005 10:32:54 PM I have a 600m. It gets ridiculously hot. 178 - MUGU - 9/3/2005 6:35:08 AM AGU IN BF KEEP OFFFFFFFFF 179 - GUYMEN - 9/3/2005 6:33:55 AM AGU IN BF 180 - Ed - 9/1/2005 6:20:06 AM Dell Latitude D610. Just purchased 8/25/2005. So frickin hot. My IBM T42 is a gem. I realize how much better of a laptop it is than the Dell everyday. Dell has got so much money. Why can't they at least copy the design of the IBM. Shame on IBM for selling out to Lenovo. There is a mass exodus from Lenovo because everyone is scared they won't live up to being a real IBM. That's how we are forced into buying Dell laptops. Dell desktops are wonderful. Why can't the laptop division get it right? 181 - James Reid - 9/1/2005 6:16:33 AM My Inspiron 1100 is starting to slow down after an hour's use due to heat. It's been 2 years since I purchased it, and now it's really getting unbearable. I have to frequently shut it down and let it cool off for a while before I can get back to using it. 182 - Ed - 9/1/2005 6:08:43 AM Dell Latitude D610. Just purchased 8/25/2005. So frickin hot. My IBM T42 is a gem. I realize how much better of a laptop it is than the Dell everyday. Dell has got so much money. Why can't they at least copy the design of the IBM. Dell desktops are wonderful. Why can't the laptop division get it right? 183 - Andrei Goga - 8/30/2005 3:23:52 PM my Dell Latitude D600 gets so hot on the underside that if you tried to fry an egg on it it would burn it... it's impossible to touch almost, and utilities on the net that control the fans dont seem to work on this model... unfortunately... it's an old model by now, and i don't expect a fix... but perhaps these thoughts could be taken into account for future models... 184 - Chris Muron - 8/30/2005 8:53:03 AM We have 5 or 6 d600 that get hot, and a d800 that constantly crashes. We are switching away from Dell and buying our computers from CDW. 185 - Joel - 8/30/2005 8:05:39 AM I have a 600m that has had the motherboard replaced by dell FOUR times and they still refuse to acknowledge that there is a problem with the design of the laptop. 186 - Kristin - 8/26/2005 10:16:20 AM My Dell Inspiron 5100 gets extremely hot and often causes the computer to shut down. Dell replaced the fan after less than a year of ownership. I just had the fan replaced again for the same problem. My warranty has since expired, so the next fan would have to be purchased by me, which is not going to happen. Dell should acknowledge that this is happening, and I should not have to pay for their mistakes. 187 - waylon carl - 8/22/2005 1:34:29 PM Called Dell, they denied a problem and sent a tech to replace my fan gratis (of course, under warranty and all). They have great customer service but this is driving me nuts. I can routinely expect <2 fps on any graphic intensive app and heats capable of legitimately burning my skin if I'm not careful. Denial of the design flaw of the machine is absolutely unacceptable. 188 - Chia - 8/21/2005 11:07:38 PM Yes this laptop IS a piece of shit!, The Original Hard Drive (Hitachi) burned out. It always lose data and has corrupted files constantly, it is hot because the hard drive sits right under the left palm. The LCD Backlight Inverter burned out,(it is the piece which powers up the backlight of the LCD screen located bottom center area of the LCD screen. The Power Adaptor jack located on the mother board cracked too. I'm personally a technician and I have repaired the laptop myself by ordering the replacement parts from dell (thank god for the warranty). When I have opened up the laptop.. I have noticed that there is literally NO VENT WHATSOEVER where the memory, wireless card, and hard drive is located. It is airtight, which explains the hot temperatures at those areas. What I noticed was unneccesary was that extremely big piece of heatsink they used for the chipsets. Dell will have to redesign a new casing for that laptop, and add an airpath from hard drive to the CPU Heatsink/Fan, or extend the height of the laptop by a little. Thumbs down to dell for a job badly done.! 189 - Justin - 8/21/2005 2:31:19 AM D600 overheats if I play games. It slows down to about 1 fps until I cool it down 190 - Alice Harrison - 8/18/2005 3:02:29 PM I have an Inspiron 1150 that frequently overheats. I am about to send it back in (I have CompleteCare) because it has repeatedly shut itself off. I have gotten first-degree burns on my right leg from using the laptop, even through clothes. 191 - Matthew - 8/17/2005 10:19:17 PM I just got a Dell D600 a couple of weeks ago from my company, and this is the hottest damn computer I have ever used. I hate using this thing in my lap, and it completly burns my hand. I hate this piece! 192 - Jose Luis Resendiz - 8/16/2005 6:36:43 PM Yes, in Unisys Mexico we have some of this machines Latitude D600 and the heat is very notorius, and in some cases the machine fails and freeze. Bad factory design...yes Sir 193 - Ian - 8/16/2005 12:18:45 PM I've an inspiron 600m. It really sucks when the heat builds up! 194 - toan pham - 8/15/2005 11:55:05 PM hack empires 195 - Casey - 8/15/2005 7:06:02 PM My insprion 1150 Runs hot and shuts down. I now only buy IBM. Dell is shit. 196 - Ankeeta - 8/15/2005 10:10:10 AM My dell is so hot! I was wearing jeans and within a matter of minutes it over heated and so I took it off my lap. The next day I found a blistered, dark mark on my thigh- it burned me! 197 - Albert oh - 8/12/2005 6:18:43 PM yea, my laptop burns my left hand. they need to fix it 198 - Jonathan Epner - 8/12/2005 10:55:39 AM My hand is burning. Its no joke. It's making me miserable. D800 with 768mb 199 - Anonymous - 8/11/2005 2:28:46 PM I could have seen this site before I buy my new D600 recently.Certainly is hot after some time. I have called dell Tech and he said to replace the hard drive. I replaced the Hard drive and still have same issue.. I won't recommend Dell any more... I do not know what to do.. 200 - Bob - 8/11/2005 3:27:14 AM The slow down in games and other intensive software has been widely reported. It's due to dell's changes in the thermal algorithms starting with BIOS A07. The CPU drops to 600 MHz after it gets to about 75-80 degrees Celsius for awhile. It even occurs on ugly, old 3D games That said dell basically has sold us a defective notebook considering a graphics card is used to play games and they give you the option to buy it, and yet it can't play games!! Dell has known about this problem for a long time and keeping quiet about it. Contact your state attorney general. I'm sure dell has broken some consumer protection laws. 201 - Bill L. - 8/8/2005 6:17:33 PM Add me to this list of burn victims. I have a D600, which gets so hot sometimes, that I could cook a steak on it. It mostly happens if and when I am playing games. If I am just surfing the net, or using Excell or something, I have no problem. But load up a game, and then I am visiting the burn ward of the local hospital. The bottom of my laptop has burn marks on it. I am going to see about buying one of those platforms that you sit the laptop on that will cool it off. Hopefully that will solve my problems. I will also buy some compressed air. Might as well try everything. 202 - Bill L. - 8/8/2005 5:28:09 PM Add me to this list of burn victims. Please Dell get this fixed or something 205 - David Haisell - 8/4/2005 4:30:33 PM I got a 600m and the same thing happened. I called tech support and was told to upgrade BIOS. That was a couple weeks ago, and I can still fry an egg on my laptop. I think somebody's going to have to burn themselves and sue Dell for millions before anybody at Dell does anything about it. "Dude, I'm gettin' hosed!" 206 - ariel - 8/2/2005 2:19:56 PM Pass admin the bios 207 - BPT747 - 8/2/2005 12:23:33 PM 600m here the commpressed air trick doesn't work with a 600m because they overheat when spankin new. the hot left hand doesn't bother me I find it relaxes my hand however the frameshow I am rewarded with when the memory hits 140F is not acceptable and I am all for some change on this platform. (I want this model to work not to recieve a diferent one) The heat on my left hand did go down about 10 degrees when my hitachi death star died and I asked dell for a fujitsu (this only lowers the temp it doesn't make it low enought for most to stop complaining but you may want to ask dell for one anyways because they don't loose data like a hitachi) Why does every post I make on this laptop have to be a rant? 208 - Sarah - 8/2/2005 10:09:46 AM I end up having to play games with an ice pack sitting on the left front corner of my machine. Looks silly, very inconvenient when travelling, but keeps it from overheating. 209 - Ford - 8/2/2005 8:21:43 AM Yes, Dell D600 and stupid hot wrist rest... Y ? Y make a good laptop and then put a spanner in ? Previous machine a P4 2.6Ghz tosh laptop.. no heat issues 210 - Karl Slaikeu - 8/1/2005 11:11:29 AM My boss owns a Dell Laptop and complains that the surface is sometimes too hot to work with. 211 - lotlot - 7/31/2005 3:46:59 AM i just curious..if you have a ice cream business..is i apllicable also in refrigeradors...to reduce heat or necessarily control heat through computers...is there a software system like dat...tnx 212 - Natarajan - 7/26/2005 7:46:22 PM I have a D505 and it gets hot after 2 hours of usage. 213 - anonymous coward - 7/26/2005 7:08:54 PM D800 here, 1GB of RAM from Crucial. The unit gets pretty hot under the memory slot and yes the left arm rest gets hot but not as hot as egg-frying bottom of the memory slot and above the center of the keyboard. One day I got an idea to buy an extra memory door and drill holes in it. Suffice to say, $20 later and few hours of drilling, the temperature dropped only a few C which is insignificant. Blowing compressed air into ducts does not do anything. We are probably talking about manufacturing/design fault with the whole series (D600, D800, i8xxx etc). At work I have an IBM R40 with 1GB of RAM and that machine is never hot to touch, just mild to warm and it's a 2.4GHz P4. Spread the word to friends, never buy D(h)ell... 214 - ioannis paganis - 7/26/2005 5:40:49 PM Concerning the Inspirons 5150. I did solve the heating problem completely. Dell recomended (and some people here also)that I should blow some compressed air through the vents and the fan, behind the laptop. I did it, and a cloud of dust particles came out. I actually sprayed the whole machine and it works like new! I just can't believe that so much dust could accumulate inside the fan and the heatsink. I even run the same programs I used to run before and the machine is smooth and silent. No fan noise or heating or shuting down issues anymore with graphics. I may have to take back my previous comments about this Dell b/c trully I have not had any other problems with it ever since I got it! 215 - John - 7/26/2005 8:59:02 AM MY dell d600 laptop does run pretty hot. Maybe its because I run it almost 24/7. Only let it charge a few hours. 216 - John - 7/26/2005 8:55:26 AM MY dell d600 laptop does run pretty hot. Maybe its because I run it almost 24/7. Only let it charge a few hours. 217 - Massimo Dal Zotto - 7/26/2005 7:14:57 AM Hot and noisy. My D600 has the harddisk constantly at 50C and the fan always at max speed. This happens with the cpu at the lower speed (600MHz) and the machine almost idle. The only way to keep the left palm rest at a reasonable temperature is to use an usb flyfan pointed at the keyboard. The high temperature is also causing many mouse jumps and random clicks when I use the trackpad. Very annoying. 218 - Song Toan - 7/25/2005 10:53:48 PM My Dell Inspiron 600m is a bit left-hand hot. I always have to put something below on oneside so that the air can circulate well. However, since last week the fan failed to start at boot up time. The fan does work if I use a software to turn it on! Now I have to run that tool automatically after login in Windows otherwise my laptop will burn out. I will face the real problem when I need to reinstall Windows XP. 219 - ioannis paganis - 7/25/2005 7:24:13 AM I own a DELL INSPIRON 5150 and it gets very very hot. It shuts down after 2 hours of use and I have regret buying it b/c of that. Other than this problem everything else works great but the overheating of the machine is a serious one. I have lost unsaved work many times and since I am a web developer it is very frustrating to be in a position like that. I would never buy a Dell again b/c I am afraid this problem occurs at many of their laptops. I could be wrong but I am very skeptical about buying a dell again. Too bad Dell is such a huge seller but with serious heating issues on supposendly "good" machines 220 - KKW - 7/24/2005 11:13:42 AM Add me to your list. I've had my Dell Latitude D600 since December 2003 and it was not hot in the beginning. I use my laptop on a desk during the day, but often use it on my lap in the evening. About two months ago, I realized that I had started putting something between the laptop and my legs (a magazine or pillow) because it was so hot I thought my legs would burn. Then I noticed the discoloring by the left palm and realized that is hot, too. I have the gold package service contract and Dell would have replaced parts right away, but my schedule made it a bit difficult. This week, a tech replaced the fan and motherboard. It's now even hotter. As I write, I have the laptop on a magazine on top of a pillow and I can feel the heat through both. I started searching the web for information about overheating just now when I realized that I will have to use the pc on desk only. I've made sure that the vent is not blocked and pulled out the battery but it makes no difference. Has anyone burned out a harddrive? 221 - amita - 7/24/2005 9:00:03 AM I had a dell inspiron 5100 - it is blazing hot and have to keep off the table to cool it off! The first time I used it was at a LAN party and my buds and I played Halo for hours on end and I never noticed it's frame rate dropping at all because it never did. Could it possibly be because my friend had his A/C cranked up the whole time? But anyway, after that day I played other games such as Age of Empires II (which is a 2d) game and it works fine. After that I tried games such as Empire Earth and Battlefield 1942 and it works very well for awhile but then after it gets really hot the frame rate drops so that it is brutally unplayable. I've read all over the web that it's because the system is too hot or something and it makes the processor speed drop to 600mhz and it's really annoying because I buy a 2.0Ghz notebook and get this. My graphics card is the latest that Dell has given to the 600m which is the ATi Mobility Radeon 9000. I also have 1gb RAM which is sufficient to handle most games. I've read and have found 3 solutions: 1. change the fan speed but i doubt that will have any profound effect on the heat and it also might screw up (i'm no computer genius) 2. change the BIOS back to A06 (i didn't buy this notebook to have it then reverted somehow to an older version of the BIOS) 3. use a cooling pad --I think i'll consider this one and hope for the best now. If there is anyone to blame, I think it should be the Dell engineers. They should have engineered it so that the hard drive and DIMM area could get more circulation and not mess up on applications such as games. I had no quarrel with Dell up to this point because they have sold me a nice desktop, and notebook except for the overheating problem. They should know that people use the 600m for gaming too and they should address that problem. I will stay alert until Dell has done something about this. 226 - Fab - 7/21/2005 10:31:43 AM my dell 5150 also gets hot.I had a toshiba and a thinkpad in the past and none of them was so hot. maybe not even that warm. however I think I am not yet at the point of many people who posted a message here. I cannot say my left or right hand cannot stay on the laptop. I did buy a cool mat. it reduces the temperature of 6C degrees. I cleaned the vent. That's important. It helped and redured 2-3C degrees. yes, when I play games it goes high but always below 55C. max for the harddisk. You are crazy if you let it go beyond that (I have read 65C!!!!) Doing normal work I am on 43C. A lot depends on your environment temperature too.If you put it on your legs, you may obstruct the vent on the bottom. Certainly DELL are warmer/hotter than other computer. I don't know if this is because I have a pentium 4 (known for being warmer than other predecessors) or because the design of Dell. I had other computers, but it was different technologies. 227 - Steve Hardesty - 7/20/2005 10:17:06 PM The area under my left hand gets so hot that it causes my hand to tingle and get numb. It's not the palm rest, but the bottom of the machine. I don't want to have to worry about this hot laptop on my legs... or about a laptop getting too hot on a table or something. Keep us posted on any developments. I'll try taking out the battery when it's on the cord. Thanks. 229 - Mekonnen Beyene - 7/17/2005 4:14:29 AM I want to know the address of the manifacture of DELL computer in China or Malaysia & I want to import DELL brand computers Regards M.Beyene 230 - David Truax - 7/17/2005 12:01:52 AM My D600 always ran a little hot, but I recently upgraded from 512 MB to 1G and the memory cover registers 137 degrees F according to my instant read thermometer. Some times logging me off, shutting the computer off, closing programs, etc. Depending on where the curser may be when you try to retrieve it. 236 - Dave O. - 7/11/2005 9:04:38 PM I was just thinking again about the laptop heat issue again and realized that I made a bad mistake. The Li-Ion battery is on the right side. I was thinking of the C-series Latitudes for some reason. The heat from the left side of the palmrest is the hard drive side. Those generate some heat as well. The faster they spin, the more heat. Make sure that the drive isn't failing. I have replaced quite a few of those, too. And I have felt them get rather warm, but have never replaced one because of a heat complaint from an end-user. Sorry for the mis-information!! Hope that helps... 237 - Dave O. - 7/11/2005 8:55:45 PM Hi all! I have looked over some of these posts and most complain about the hot left side of the palm rest. Instead of complaining, think about what is there. The battery!! If you are running on AC power, take the battery out. There is no need for it to be there. I am a Dell tech for a very large local bank and have deployed several dozen of D600's and D610's. I just had one today that had a hot battery. However, that unit was 16 months old. Li-Ion batteries do get warm under heavy use during discharge, just like the battery on a cell phone. Did you ever notice that your cell phone battery gets warm when you talk on it for an extended period of time? Li-Ion batteries!! Run the laptop on AC, if possible, and yank the battery. Today's battery replacement was the first that has come in to me because of heat issues. Just about every other battery replacement has been because of premature failure under warranty. Hope this helps! And Dell's D600 is a 600M without the fancy, shmancy colors...All hardware underneath is essentially the same, EXACTLY the same. Dell make a very good product, so don't fear a warm palmrest. 238 - Gurman - 7/10/2005 9:56:58 PM MY DELL 8100 IS HOT!!! and has noisy fans 239 - JerkyMan - 7/9/2005 9:00:32 PM My Dell Inspiron 600m also gets really hot. It gets so hot that after about 10-20 minutes, the processor goes from 2GHz and drops to 600MHz, even though I set it for high performance. This happens while playing high-intensive 3D games, really makes me mad when I'm doing good and then it's very slow. I have to exit the game and wait a few minutes, then it goes back to 2GHz. Talked with Dell and they suggested a BIOS upgrade, which I already had the most current revision. Then they wanted me to run the GUI diagnostics which all had passed. I haven't talked to them since. I was considering on getting a cooling fan that I can put under the laptop, but should I really do that? I've had this for 3 months and never had a problem with it until 2 weeks ago. 240 - JerkyMan - 7/9/2005 8:01:37 PM My Dell Inspiron 600m also gets really hot. I purchased the extended warranty, and Dell said they will send me a NEW 610 (because they don't have the D600 anymore). Then I received a Refurbished D600, which I did not want. I am still fighting with them to send me a new machine, but they are refusing. 243 - DR - 7/7/2005 1:49:07 PM Ummm, Don't have this problem. Been using mine for years now. Although, I do notice that if I don't have the notebook sitting on a flat surface, where air can move under the notebook, then it will heat up on me. For those of you that have massive performance problems when it gets hot, well, thats just a good sign that your notebook is probably permenatently damaged! 244 - shaun kamark - 7/7/2005 1:01:38 AM (((THESOLUTION)))I think to the 266mhz bios when i use 333mhz and heat with a lil bit of a tweek,I was on some crack building this lap but for just $1167.00 built of ebays deals,I had my dell D600 for a month and i got pissed the fuck off,D600 some has centrino sticker with bios logo and some has pentium m sticker with pentium m bios logo, mines had the pentium m bios and sticker thats why i got pissed,i learned that its all the same,i tried to change the clock bios,suselinix,x11 using unix from a mac since im a mac junkie to try D600,firefox,mozilla,still cant find a way,the only way 1.6 to intel 2.0ghz sonoma chip bolts up with the stock 855pm but watch closley to fsb must be in the 533,555 alround fsb,dell600M mother board..cheap and 32 to 64bit if you want mines is 32,i loaded 2gig dell samsung ram and i advise get the dell ram no ebay can match or whatever its dell for all i know they make there own memory who knows one in each slot now that get sort of costly,80gig HD must have 7500rpm,just max out the laptop but the HD is the first thats makes most of every inch in transfering all your internal hardware speeds,i sold my self out like a loser but fuck the bios with 2gig pentium,2gig ram,a16 or a60 bios, but i you think about it everything is still dell it like being traped in a captive dell portal its funny to me,im not to sure if its because i used a 600m motherboard with its downloaded bios and driver off dell, com, the switching of hardware on one to another is almost seemless, four elements i put only,600mMOTHERBOARD,MEMORY,80gigIDE7200RPM,thats it for the speed and its super fast,oh upgraded to a.b.g intel pci not dells, now the heat from all the power or even the stock configurations danm dell you slacked i almost fried my memory card and paint off the resistors not to mention HD you suckas,i saw the guts in the lap i almost barf my own guts...dell you weak,i grabed some of that wax coating from radioshack it's shock and heat protection, wrapped the HD with radioshack heat resisting tape as well as the power ac,and might sound ghetto but i used sound proofing tape,i dynamated the inside before i did the motherboard and internals swap, radioshack one stop shack using heat tape to tape up some of the wires from the heat which wont matter because wraped the HD like it was a mummy and i laid it to rest, check the heat sink mines was ok since it was close to the HD,oh i used no glue lining the caraudio dampening might make a mess when heated up,just line it good and dont wrap the HD to much, make so the casing can be put back together remember the laptop is slim,if its done right and every is in ready to put back on the keyboard panel put something or keep lairing bottom left side so you wont feel any warmness, and waaala done..even my dvd drive dont make those rattel sounds when its booting, everything is compressed snug making the lap feel good,i shake it and i dont hear sounds the only sound i hear and suposed hear is dock conecting gadget on the botom of the lap,put in the best battery from dell $143.00,i dont trust ebay for that one and it last long time, mess with the dell quikset power,i put it on notebook less power less heat, then if i like have fun playing warcraft etc or intenet, media then i go full max power to my ati9000 on the 855 intel chip set with the ac cord out...think about it!!!,i also put the ati radeon, centrino,xp badges on so looks oem but look at how the stock 2 badges first cause i know its not put on real strait from the factory the centrino is good you can put the centrino sticker right on the bs pentium m badge leave the xp under the centrino put the ati or where ever i have mines under so looks OEM cool,i put the ati and centrino stickers on the outside lid in the corner, medeon tv tuner from germany with philips chip set(usb)pcmcia slot hold my audigy Z soundcard, two partitions operating system suse9.2 useing KDE interface and xpPROserPACK2 on the mozilla networks such as dear park alpha 1 so dont hack me please dont make me but my...notepad hahhaha,it's cherry i love the d66 other than that why would i spend so much time in to it,it can be a transformer..more than meets thee eye i hate windows i love macs tiger system beware xp home or pro for those fools they see you not them thats why people love macs its easy to admin, 245 - geekgirl - 7/6/2005 4:52:32 PM Chalk me up as another warm left-hander. I've had my D600 for a year and a half now and if it wasn't for this problem, I'd be happy. But now my HDD regularily hits 59-60 C within 10 minutes of booting up. And my laptop's efficiency seems to have slowed to a crawl, and I'm almost positive it has to do with the heat issues. 246 - spark - 7/6/2005 2:22:05 PM i own a dell 600m and the notebook gets very hot! it just barely fried something so it will run for about 10 minutes max and then freeze. when i reboot it just boots to a freeze but keeps getting hotter... it really sucks because the warranty just went out... 247 - brijesh - 7/6/2005 8:32:31 AM hey i have d600 when i play dvd picture freeze and i still can hear the voice what could it be wrong??? 248 - Yi - 7/6/2005 3:53:28 AM I have an inspiron 600m. Wouldn't care less if it's only hot, hot means good heat dissipation right? BUT, while the left hand is hot, the computer slows down by at least 90%, I'd estimate 95%. Annoys the heck out of me when I am doing anything that requires graphics (games, CAD, etc.). Tried to contact ATI about it, but they don't care about mobility ATI cards, so they blame Dell for the problem also. 249 - Jonas - 7/4/2005 1:23:15 PM How could those people not think about this problem (or even whorse, know that problem and do nothing to fix it).. I'm so angry with DELL !!!!!!!!! on my inspiron 8600c the left side gets so cold that's imp. to use the laptop, I have the same problem as others here while playing games, it lags so much for 5minutes that's impossibile to play everything... that just SUX, hope someone will find a way to fix it.. 250 - Dave - 7/1/2005 8:39:27 AM I've had my D600 (P4M 1.7) for over a year and a half and have had to replace the battery, the power adapter after the wire got frayed right at the block, and the CD-RW/DVD Drive when it could only read Cds it burned (not any burned Cd, only it's burned Cds). Luckily I was in school for the battery and Cd drive problems so the school took care of it, but recently I just bought a new power adapter rather than try and send it back under warranty and get it replaced (only $35 total by the way, from Dell). I don't find the palm heat as annoying as: 1. Dealing with Dell (Customer Service or just the website) 2. Graphics card heating and killing any gaming enjoyment. 3. Massive reduction in performance when on battery power. 4. Hard Drive getting so hot its uncomfortable to type. 5. 1/8" Jacks for the sound card are directly above the HD (Why run your audio signal past an obvious noise sorce) Those are my primary frustrations, but if anybody comes across a solution for the GPU getting so hot - or heatsinks for RAM or cooling pipes for the HD or better cooling for CPU that's not a board with fans I stick under my computer - please email me (Fischer_Dave@Hotmail.com) I would really appreciate it. Oh yeah, anybody else successful with get Dell to replace a Latitude D600 with a D610 (or anything else)? 251 - Shrap - 6/30/2005 9:39:13 PM My Dell Inspiron 8600 gets hot (of course). although it is definatly HOT on my hands, what really disapoints is how this system cant play the new games it was designed for. 1. The graphics card temperature goes above 100c degrees when playing games, its possible to replace dells cheap and rubbish heat disperser with a sheet of copper, but dell would rather the graphics card run hot 2. The processor operates between 50c-65c, dell has it so when it gets hotter than 60c, it gets a speed downshift from 1700mhz to 1400mhz and this makes any game your playing turn into a slide show. Imagine trying to play and within 20 minutes it slows to slideshow-mode until the processor gets under 60 degrees, then it is back to normal (..and your game is lost). The cycle repeats itself every 10 minutes or so. 2 recent games that are not playable because of this design flaw include GTR : a racing sim, and Battlefield 2 : war fps. 252 - Doug Shade - 6/30/2005 11:53:08 AM Yes... HOT as heck. I'd be happy if they sent me dock and external keyboard. 253 - justin - 6/29/2005 6:19:13 PM my battery gets incredibly hot. right below the handrest and it ends up making the whole computer hot. 254 - Derek S - 6/26/2005 10:03:47 PM I own a 600m that overheats after 15 mins of any 3D apps, palm rest hot, bien sur. 255 - Max Golovanov - 6/26/2005 12:29:36 PM I have Dell Latitude D505 provided to me by my company. And the left side is becoming too hot... even the left-side palmrest has already changed its color from silver to dark brown - completely burned out from the frequent use. This wasn't happening with my other laptops before, now my laptop now looks ugly. I didn't previously realize that the left side is much hotter than the right side. Thanks for this hint - I noticed it now! Anyway, I don't think they are going to fix it soon.... it's easier to change the laptop to some other brand. 256 - Rob - 6/26/2005 9:47:33 AM I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop. It has always run hot and started to shut down recently when running graphic intensive programs. I now keep it elevated on two small books (I do not cover the fan) on top of my desk. It does not shut down as much. But, If I am running my webcam it will eventually get too hot and shut down. 257 - Eddy - 6/25/2005 10:34:44 PM I've also had the problem with the D600 palmrest heating up to an annoying level. What seems to have worked for me is the following: I took two plastic bottle tops from the 1.5 liter water bottles and placed them under the front portion of the laptop. This allows more are to ciculate around the underside of the laptop permitting the heat to more quickly dissipate. It has made a big difference. While the palmrest is still quite warm, it is not nearly as hot as before. I called Dell and informed them that the plastic casing of the laptop has deformed from the heat problem. they are sending out a new casing with a technician to swap it out. I'm not sure if the new casing will have any additional insulation. We'll see. good luck 258 - g pag - 6/25/2005 5:47:42 PM d505 gets hot :( spent about 2 hours trying to resolve it - running fangui.exe as a test to reduce temp no luck so far on HD temp :(( , but fangui helps reduce CPU temp by 5 degrees :) on hot day in london HD temp got up to 55 degrees C (madness) its my data i'm worried about not my hand please fix this Dell please 259 - Eric Tran - 6/22/2005 12:15:30 PM Dell 600m that overheats after about 2 hours of usage. A shutdown/cooldown period of about 15 minutes is required to get the system to function normally again. Left palm area is way too hot. 260 - Anonymous - 6/22/2005 6:35:04 AM I work for an *authorized dell support center supporting over 3500 customers. I am very familiar with the problem everyone is experiencing and have seen EVERY failure these machines could have. Some Things to keep in mind. - The hitachi travelstar is the WORST hard disk ever. It fails without warning, and dissipates extreme heat. - I have not seen too much failure with the seagates, and fujitsus - I replace the motherboards on these laptops once a day. Keep them clean, when dirt, crumbs, etc get inside it shorts the board = Downtime. - These D600s constantly have bad batteries where the outer, inner, and outer LED will flash. The battery lifetime is never what it is rated for. Although I cannot provide answers for your problems, I can tell you I use a D600 daily and have not had 1 problem with it yet, - It is running an 80gb seagate hard disk and I try to keep it clean. Good Luck 261 - Prashant Pandey - 6/21/2005 9:32:58 AM Exactly same problem, left palm gets very hot. Even worse, what good is a laptop if you can't put it on your laptop! It an even worse problem... 262 - Ludo Max - 6/20/2005 6:05:38 PM It's a shame that Dell has become such a horrible company. I talked to tech support today June 20, 2005 and -- because of my dissatisfaction due to an issue that they have not been able to fix in 3 weeks -- ended up talking with a supervisor. I also mentioned the problem with the left palmrest on the D600 and D800 getting hot and pointed out that they had to be aware of it given all the attention on the internet. The guy told me that I shouldn't look for that kind of info on the internet and that if it isn't on the official Dell support forums there is no issue. I asked him if he was denying that the left palmrest on these machines gets hot. He said that there were no problems with it and that he has a D600 himself and it is just fine.... So still denying, denying, denying. 263 - Olavi Valli - 6/19/2005 9:46:05 AM The hard disk temerature on my Dell D600 rises to over 51 degrees C as soon as the machine has been running for a few minutes; clearly there is a heat problem and it is inexcusable that Dell refuses to do anything about this; I have to use an external keyboard to avoid the heat from the left palmrest, under which the scorching hot HD sits. 264 - isaac bowman - 6/17/2005 10:43:11 PM I have a 600m for about 2 years now. After one year the motherboard went out. Dell sent me a new MB but Dell's customer care, said I would have to install it mayself!!!! Now the ram runs very hot. I have about half of the power that my 600m used to have. 265 - K Heisey - 6/16/2005 3:01:01 PM It's extremely annoying... a sweaty left hand on the verge of burning and a right hand that is fine. And it seems worse when I use the docking station. Not sure why. Have others had luck forcing Dell to give you a D610 to replace the D600? 266 - K Heisey - 6/16/2005 3:00:47 PM It's extremely annoying... a sweaty left hand on the verge of burning and a right hand that is fine. And it seems worse when I use the docking station. Not sure why. Have others had luck forcing Dell to give you a D610 to replace the D600? 267 - Rob - 6/15/2005 6:55:19 PM Down with HOT LEFT HANDS! I hate my school for giving me this burn everytime im trying to write a late nite essay...my left hand is hot damnit! 268 - pink - 6/15/2005 1:35:21 PM hey i agree i have been thru 3 d600's all have the hot problem on the left side. one of them actually got so hot so often it started to warp the laptop. have had many power issues as well. i think that its cheaply made and hope that the future makes better machines. its a shame because i was so exceited about my shinny new laptop, other than the hot and power problems, i like it a lot. 269 - MGBADA JOE ABA - 6/15/2005 2:33:54 AM I LOVE THIS PAGE. 270 - Geoffrey Deasey - 6/13/2005 2:26:30 PM I have an i8600 and its way to hot on the left palm rest, who in their right mind would put the hard drive with no air pathway right under a place that the operator puts his body,, DUMB, Im going back to IBM as much as I do not like them. 271 - Andrew - 6/11/2005 11:58:37 PM My inspiron 600m has the same issue (hot left palm rest). It's intolerable especially under heavy loads on hard drive, the temperature easily goes upto 60~62 degree C! It's damn hot!!! It's definitely a design flaw and DELL should take an action ASAP!!! BTW, Is it really helpful to replace the current HDD (Toshiba 5400rpm 40GB) with Hitachi 7k60 model (7200rpm, 60GB) to reduce this damn heat? 272 - dADDY - 6/10/2005 5:55:50 PM I have a dell inspiron 1100 lap top, it does not start up but rather it says its a disk read error and it does not do nothing Others have said i need a ned motherboard. Please advise 273 - Bob - 6/9/2005 10:00:59 PM Lot's of activity since last time I checked. Tech support and customer care wasn't very helpful. Dell sent a refurbished d600. Talking with all the techs, I noticed that they explicitly denied that there was a problem with the d600 since they had their own personal experience with them. Still they decided to go with the exchange, perhaps because that is dell's unofficial policy for those of us who do call to complain. Call dell and ask for an upgrade to the d610, it does NOT have the heat problems, at least not to the same extent. At least that's what I'm trying to do. I can't get my money back, but the only way to fix this problem is to just get dell to send me a d610 for exchange. 274 - San - 6/9/2005 7:19:26 PM Heck, purchased a Latitude C640 from a Techie I know at work. Actually fell in love with it because it offered all the features I wanted as well as the speed....as long as I did not use it too long. hot! Hot! HOT! What did I know? I only wish I had researched a little before making this purchase. I like to sit in my den, watch tv and do a little work with the laptop on my lap. Not this thing. It does gets Burning Hot. I usually have to place coasters under the corners to provide a little air flow under it but it still seems to heat up anyway. I am not a happy camper. 275 - Michael P. Crilley - 6/9/2005 3:36:43 PM My Inspiron 8600 runs hot, on the left side of the keyboard. I've already sent it back for warranty service to replace the cooling fan, and now only two weeks later the fan refuses to run again.... So far I have had more than satisfactory experience with Dell tech support, both in online chat and over the phone. 276 - Bill Tucker - 6/8/2005 4:53:39 AM D610. In A/C environ. Sits at 55C but can get up to 65C. I put some pens underneath it to get it some air. Anyone know if a D610 Bios update is out? (I have March 2005) Keep me in the loop. 277 - MC - 6/7/2005 3:19:15 PM Hi guys/gals, in Air Con environment with the D600 open, the temp of the hard drive drops to 40 - 45 Celsius which is decent. But I have a docking station, when docked the hard drive temp shoots up to 59 degrees Celsius. 4 degrees Celsius outside of normal operating temps. 278 - Hass Murphy - 6/7/2005 1:15:33 PM Sane deal. The battery is incredibly hot. 279 - Darren Smith - 6/7/2005 7:42:09 AM I just bought a new Dell D600 laptop - and now I feel like a right sucker/mug! I've previously owned a Dell laptop (an Inspiron 8100), and before that I have owed a variety of other brand laptops for over 10 years. I was impressed with the 8100, and the Dell support service, which is why I immediately chose Dell for my next laptop. Well, after using this new D600 for a few hours, I am amazed at the shear bad design of placing a HOT hard drive immediately underneath the palms of the user – without there being any heat insulation in between. What are Dell playing at? It doesn't take long for the heat to become to much. I use my laptop for work – so I need to sit in front of it and think and concentrate. But this is when the heat becomes a problem, because it is a constant distraction! My left hand gets sweaty, and so “sticks” to the laptop surface. So then I need to go and wash my hands again. I intend to return this Dell soon (I've only had it a few days), and I will expect an apology from someone at Dell. They should only sell this machine with a usage warning. 280 - Design Major - 6/6/2005 5:00:45 PM The left palm rest of my 600M is so hot now that it's getting uncomfortable to use. It was working great for a year and a half but since then it's been painful. 281 - andy g. - 6/6/2005 10:22:59 AM Hello My tabletop, sofa cover, and lap everything gets hot whenever I place my Dell inspiron 1150 laptop on them. I noticed that I had no problems with my other Toshiba laptop. Is there anyway I can fight this issue with Dell? Though, contrary to what people have posted about customer service as Dell, I found them to be very helpful. I prefer using online chat to keep the records of conversation with Dell Support. Andy 282 - massive - 6/2/2005 12:36:29 AM to be fair, the guy from www.bay-wolf.com replied to mail but mentioned that he beleives DELL fixed it by placing "heat absorbing tile" and that he heard guy fix it by punching some wholes thru caddy. That's what I think I'll try. I also read about it on message boards. 283 - massive - 6/1/2005 1:32:34 PM just unbeliavable. more on conspiracy: (i) there is this site: www.bay-wolf.com. has _ALL_ info on dell but the fact that it burns your hand. (ii) from www.cnet.com/ The bad: Mediocre battery life. from the same site, senior editor (I have vision of daily show) Justin Jaffe does not mention this problem in the whole review on DELL D600 and so on..... there is something wrong? Are these people getting paid to keep quite? Or is only my model shite (appereantly not)! It does not make sense. BTW Jose sorry for using this as a message board. If you tell me I'll stop. Also I went to Waterloo as well! 284 - MC - 6/1/2005 8:44:49 AM Hitachi drive operating temp specs are 5 - 55 Centigrade, right now the temp has risen to 58 Centigrade, yes I use this laptop daily. You can see my drive will have a premature life AGAIN. 285 - MC - 6/1/2005 8:18:02 AM I have to keep my left hand arched over the keyboard. I will be calling Dell next week about this very poor design. I have had one hard drive fail on me already. I got the laptop in January, it's ok in AC environments but here in the tropics it can burn your palm or your freaking leg off. I had an older slower Toshiba before and never had this problem. Right now the hd temp is at 54 Celsius, still too hot to touch. 286 - massive - 6/1/2005 2:13:11 AM MC MC, but how do you use it? 287 - MC - 5/31/2005 9:56:54 PM Yup Hard drive temps at 60 Celsius, thought it was unusual and decided to do some digging on Dell's forum and voila, others with the same problem. Even asked a friend who has an Inpsiron 600M, she has the same problem as well. 288 - massive - 5/31/2005 4:52:17 PM Sparticus thanks, that's a good idea, but my biggest problem is left palm/hand heat and that's because of HDD, and it's in front!? Does it still get the job done? Meybe together with raising the computer on chopsticks or nuts or something.... Can you beleive what we are talking about? Now I feel like in Monthy Payton sctech...... 289 - Klaus - 5/31/2005 4:23:24 PM I have a D800. Does that mean it gets even hotter? Anyhow, it was fine the first few months. Then it started to heat up so that the fan gets really loud and annoying. I tried to use it on an airplane, but I almost burned my knees. I am actually waiting for a melting mainboard so that my boss is enforced to buy a new one. :-( 290 - Sparticus - 5/31/2005 1:24:51 PM Well for me it was fine when I 1st got 10mos. ago. It operated at 37C but in the last few months the temp has jumped to 43-47. the iternal fan wrks. I now have a small fan on behind the notebook that gets the temp back to 37-39C. Maybe 43-47 is fine? I use SpeedFan to monitor temps. 291 - me again - 5/31/2005 4:19:01 AM 1.Let's at least have exectly what is the cause? Are we 100 % sure it is HD? 2. Let's also have at least some kind of direction which HD are cool, which are warm? Also does speed metter, capacity. I'd use 20 gig HD if it cool enough, I don't care. 3. I use i8kfangui to monitor HD temp. My HD IC25N060ATMR04 runs at arround 45 celsius. For me this gets unbarable. Yet I heard that some people get up to 55.... Could it be that fangui measures temperatures differently for different HDs, ie if it uses HD sensor, HD could just lie. People lets talk about this :)! Or should I maybe try message boards, maye Jose didn't plan for this to be message board. Certainly didn't Sorry 292 - massive - 5/30/2005 3:04:34 PM 1. i found a fat wallet with two sides each of them fit perfectly on the left side of my owen/d600. 3 layers of leather + credit cards keep me ok for 15 minutes, and then I switch 2. how come none is saying anything 293 - finally - 5/30/2005 4:57:43 AM On a serious note: what bothers me most is that my viens actually are touching this hot surface, and I really feel pain in them. I am worried about this, did anyone hve some real health problems? Is there hope that I will get used to it? I feel like I am in the Twilight Zone, seriously, how is this possible. Maybe I am really sensitive, or mine really gets hot???? Did anyone modify their typing style? Please give mem some ides. Putting alumni foil seems just like postponing the eventual. It seems that the only real solution is to get a new keyboard. 294 - massive - 5/30/2005 4:53:51 AM still in shock. the stupidest thing is that the heat from HD is supposed to exit thru where my palm is. well guess what my palm is f...ing hot anyway, so the heat hardly exits, the harddrive get even hotter, my palm gets hotter..... never ending cycle. 295 - massive - 5/29/2005 4:08:25 PM well another thing that I dont get is how come there are only 230 people that signed in here!!!! And also, how is the guy that said in Dell HQ, yeah it's unusable, but let's sell it? Or maybe it cought them by surprise...? These are the things I'd like to know? And I mean... really on interntet you can find step by step instructions to make anything, but not to fix this left palm problem. Maybe because you can't? 296 - massive - 5/29/2005 2:43:36 PM As a lucky and warm owner of D600, I fail to understand and comprehend 2 things * how I didnt find this problem reading reviews of D600 * how is this even possible, that a big manifacturer allows this kind of crap, and not a cheap - ass crap notebook magnifaturer, but f...in dell!!!!!!! Solutions? NONE NONOE NEONEONOENOENOENOEOEN 297 - Jason - 5/28/2005 2:19:14 PM I have a in inspiron 8600 and the fan / heat sensor wont work right. Bottom line I can no longer play games cause the computer gets to hot. This happened 1 week after the warrantee expiration period. 298 - Paula Freeman - 5/26/2005 8:53:53 PM My Inspiron 1150 gets so hot, it burns my legs. It normally runs at 165 degrees, but as soon as the fan on the bottom right side is obstructed, the temperature shoots up to 169, then the machine shuts down. I installed the 18kfanGUI program, which runs the fan a little bit faster. The machine is still too hot to work comfortably sitting in my lap. So . . . what's the use of getting a laptop? This is a great computer, other than this one problem. What's a Dell user to do? 299 - Rob - 5/25/2005 5:48:07 AM This hot left palmrest is not only annoying but really uncomfortable. Dell must find a solution,it is impossible that in space age they don't have a cheap and effective solution to fix the HDD cooling...and we, frustrated users should speed up a little bit, before Dell stops producing them. I don't believe there are only 228 of us since this page started in 2003!!! 300 - Ashkab - 5/23/2005 5:55:47 AM I am very frustrated with my Dell inspiron 1100 with 384 memory. It heats up and freeze up even when I am not using any heavy duty application. fan is also noisy. 301 - Aliaz Porto - 5/22/2005 8:03:35 PM If people can sue McDonald's for hot coffee, why can't we do it with Dell. These laptops have a known problem and the company is not willing to fix it. I had this 1150 for few months, after 20 minutes the note book gets so hot where I need to turn it off or use a towell to put it between me. 302 - Aaron - 5/19/2005 3:57:21 PM I made the mistake of purchasing 2 Inspiron 600m. Both have the hot lefthand side problem. These machines are crap. 303 - Tyson L - 5/19/2005 1:09:21 PM Used this d600 laptop for about a year now without any particular problems. It seems though that the heat is becoming more of an issue as time progresses. Games that used to perform fine now begin to lock up after about 15-20 minutes of play with the frame rates dropping significantly for about 3-5 minutes at a time. If I have the computer docked while this happens, the USB devices plugged into the docking station begin to fail as well (the light on my optical USB mouse begins to flicker and become unresponsive - this is not the case if I use a USB port on the laptop while it's plugged into the wall). This is really too bad because I’ve had nothing but good luck with the hardware up until recently. 304 - stisev *******UPDATE******* - 5/17/2005 1:56:28 AM GUIDE TO REMOVING HEAT - INSPIRON 8600c (possibly others) Alright guys, I've got an update! Running i8600c 1.6Ghz/Hitachi 7K60/2x512MB PC2700 DDR. I did a GPU sterling silver mod & placed two similar sterling silver blocks on both my 512MB DIMMS. My dad is a master jeweler, so he cut them for me. :) Anyways, that cut down the GPU, but did not remove DIMM temps until I bought the Evercool NP-101 from www.acortech.com for $16 CA taxed & shipped (Use coupon code "PRICEWATCH". This basically uses four relatively quiet fans to cool the bottom of the computer. My RAM temps went down 9*C, in addition to everything else. It also helps a LOT with the left palm heat issue produced by the HD. Also, I did the CPU undervolting mod which you can search for and find at www.notebookforums.com. Basically, download the "RightMark CPU Utility" and undervolt your CPU. This will NOT reduce the performance of your CPU and your system will be stable, provided you stress test it properly. That reduced CPU temps a little. The left palm region is still a little warm, but NOTHING like before. The ONLY other solution is to buy the HD modular bay from Dell, remove your CD-ROM and install it there, so that the heat isn't as much of an issue. You can then get an external CD-RW/DVD-RW drive for cheap ($47 + external case cost). Hope this helps, guys! sev 305 - MPGDIGEST - 5/16/2005 8:19:52 AM D800: Has gotten so hot it has taken out 2 hard drives, the palmrest discolored to being black, and is now being replaced. On the bottom of the machine all the stickers and paint has peeled off and is getting a new bottom housing. Have heard the hard drive speed issue solution, it has the good drive in it. Also some thought of the 64mb video card not being powerful enough or heating up processing graphics. 306 - Davethetech - 5/13/2005 5:28:47 AM I have three D600s and they all run fine and I leave them on most of the time. They have treated me well adn I just got a D610...I think they're great systems. 307 - Davethetech - 5/13/2005 5:28:38 AM I have three D600s and they all run fine and I leave them on most of the time. They have treated me well adn I just got a D610...I think they're great systems. 308 - Mike Dragga - 5/12/2005 9:49:14 PM One more time Tammy () - 5/7/2005 9:50:55 AM You did pretty well overall :) Be pleased with it and treat it well and it should last you for some time! 309 - Mike Dragga - 5/12/2005 9:47:13 PM I know I just posted but to everyone whose Dell overheats above the left palmrest...thats right where your harddrive is and with it spinning away there is bound to be some heat unfourtunatley 310 - Mike Dragga - 5/12/2005 9:45:46 PM I own a Dell 600M and it doesn't really get hot thanks to the Centrino and the fact that I have modified it more than a little. I can however say that I work in the Information Services department at the college I attend and Dell machines are a favorite here. Most students roll in with either an Inspiron 1100, 1150, 1160, 5100, or 5150. These machines offer either a celeron processor in the lower end models or a P4 in the higher end ones. No matter what these things heat up like you wouldn't believe! They can't be called laptops if onlt becuase you can't get them anywhere near your lap. In terms of numbers something like 80% of the machines (1700 total or so) on campus are Dell, half of which we'll say are laptops, and 75% of those laptops are one of the above models. That means something of 500 or so. Of those in my two years here I think I have honestly seen about 250 with heat problems...1 in 2 is more than a little concerning! 311 - Chris - 5/12/2005 5:05:31 PM I have an Inspiron 1100 that gets so hot it shuts down! A call to tech support was useless, they suggested I purchase a cooling pad to put my laptop on. Perhaps the best solution is for Dell to stop putting desktop chips in laptops that can't cool them sufficiently. 312 - oguz akpinar - 5/11/2005 1:05:50 PM I have a Latitude D505 and even in normal room temprature and just after 15 minutes it gets too hot to touch (as said by you left hand). maybe if the heat air was set to get out through side instead of bottom the problem would not be this serious. I am checking for external solution right now. for example an laptop cooler (as cooler master) can be useful. 313 - Jason Job - 5/10/2005 5:59:26 PM My D600 gets WAY too hot on the left side! Please do something about this! 314 - jason shorty - 5/7/2005 6:04:03 PM I had that problem, and i solved it. I put two bolts on the bottom. The bolts are big enough lift the notebook so the back end of the laptop is about an extra 2/3 of an inch higher off of the surface than the front of the notebook. The extra airflow prevents heat build up below the notebook. It doesn't bother me a bit to carry two extra bolts. 315 - Tammy - 5/7/2005 9:50:55 AM I bought a used DellLatitude C610. Said it was used as Corporate demo for 1 month. When did Dell stop this series and is it any good? I am assuming that the D series is the replacement. It has 512 memory, 1.2 g, XP Professional and office professional, interchangable floppy/Cd. I am computer illeterate as you can tell. It was 490.00. Was this good or bad?????????? Thanks, Tammy 316 - nicho - 5/7/2005 7:20:31 AM The D600 gets far too hot on the left handside palm rest. This is definately NOT normal. Wish Dell would do something about 317 - srik - 5/6/2005 11:06:21 AM my dell laptop stopped working suddenly. it doesnt boot doesnt let me install. any suggestions. 318 - srik - 5/6/2005 11:05:27 AM my dell laptop stopped working suddenly. it doesnt boot doesnt let me install. any suggestions. 319 - Julia Venuchekov - 4/29/2005 3:49:16 PM The heat on my Inspiron 5160 has been so damaging that I have a bunch of burst veins in my thighs exactly where my laptop rests. I was used to it being uncomfortable, but this is really bad- I'm now a bit disfigured & highly unhappy about it! -JV 320 - Julia Venuchekov - 4/29/2005 3:44:42 PM The heat on my Inspiron 5160 has been so damaging that I have a bunch of burst veins in my thighs exactly where my laptop rests. I was used to it being uncomfortable, but this is really bad- I'm now a bit disfigured & highly unhappy about it! -JV 321 - Adrian Gonzalez - 4/28/2005 5:34:53 PM I'm an IT manager. We have 2 Dell Latitude D600's in our office and both of them get pretty hot on the left side. The users for this laptops are desperate and both must use a bulky fabric to withstand the heat. I suppose it's a hard disk problem or an foreseen insulation during design of this computer. Dell's solution was a BIOS update, which we downloaded from their website, with no apparent change. Guess we'll just have to get used to hot left hands. .. Cheers 322 - Matt Bettinger - 4/28/2005 9:56:34 AM I think the dell machines are 'OK' We run openbsd on them (models c400/d600 specifically). Only real complaint is the heat that these laptops produce. I can't put it on my lap without a magazine or paper under it. -mb 323 - Dossy Shiobara - 4/27/2005 2:29:48 PM I have a Dell C840 which has been plagued with lock-ups and what seem to be memory-related WinXP errors. It runs pretty damn hot underneath. I'm going to be upgrading from this Dell C840 to a Toshiba Portege M200 Tablet PC, I think. While I really, really like the large C840's 15" UXGA screen and the 2.2 GHz CPU, I'm starting to realize that Dell isn't paying close enough attention to their products. To its credit, Dell CompleteCare support is best in class. 324 - Tony K. - 4/25/2005 11:55:28 PM I got a D600 from my school's bookstore. Great machine, but not only does my left palm get hot, but the whole unit will occasionally overheat. The memory expansion slot is almost burning hot at times. 325 - Don Wilson - 4/25/2005 11:49:21 AM I have a Latitude D505 with a 60G HDD. I'm very happy with it. I do a lot of software development with it. It doesn't seem any warmer to me than other notebooks I have used. I know you should always use a notebook on a flat surface such as a table, or else use a notebook lapdesk to allow air flow under the notebook. What tool is available to get temperature readings on the Latitude? I'll check it out. Thanks. 326 - Nic Bates - 4/22/2005 3:50:25 PM Inspirin 600m gets way too hot! Very uncomfortable. Wish I knew about this before I bought it. 327 - Nathan Parker - 4/21/2005 1:37:14 PM Too bad my school forces me to burn my palm on this stupid computer. How did Dell become so popular? THey should be sued for burning our hands!! 328 - Jose Sandoval - 4/21/2005 1:16:04 PM Alex Buell, the problem is not with the older models - It's with the new Latitudes: specially the D-series. 329 - Alex Buell - 4/21/2005 6:53:33 AM http://www.diefer.de/indexe.html ~ there's a couple of free programs that controls the fans to keep the system cool. I've got a Dell 8100 and I *love* it. Definitely a keeper. 330 - khalid - 4/18/2005 6:51:32 AM well i used a toshiba satellite series and compaq and now i bought dell machine latitude c-400 and but i bought this machine coz its little lighter in weight but little hoter in heatness but its better then others coz toshiba support is such a weak think for the custmer to surve them in quality but compaq had a great fault of heatness and bcomes jam but dell is better then all but its hoty kind of but have a good drivers support and custmer support and i hope they will soon find out to get rad-of the heat 331 - Shani Harms - 4/15/2005 2:47:18 PM I have a D600 that my company gave me to use at work. I found this site while looking for a solution to the hot left palm rest. It is so unbearably hot! It really gets in the way of my work and efficiency. 332 - Dmitry Matyukhin - 4/12/2005 2:29:51 PM I have Dell Latitude D505 which my company gave me to work at. I suddenly experienced several unpredictable shutdowns of the laptop though other guys who are given the same model have not experienced this trouble. I believe that the laptop shuts down when its HDD goes too hot. I installed SpeedFan program and it shows that after switching on the temperature of the HDD installed goes up to 48 celsius in 5-10 minutes. And yes the my left wrist feels hoot surface definitely. It's not too hot to hurt me but I believe it's too hot to make the laptop shut down. 333 - Ed - 4/10/2005 11:12:31 PM I too own a Dell Latitude D600. It is just out of warranty now and all of the symptoms I have read about here are hauntingly familiar. It all started with a hot machine and calls to Dell tech support with no positive results. Then it progressed to a system that would stall after about 20 minutes of heavy use and finally I have a system that shuts down after 10 minutes or less even if idle. At the very beginning I was uncomfortable with the heat but more concerned with the effect it has on the components. Now I have a system that I was very pleased with at the start but has left me very disappointed with Dell. I will be replacing my notebook with another and it will not be a Dell. I’m thinking Acer looks good at this point. 334 - Bob - 4/9/2005 6:51:31 PM This is great, Stephen, knowing that there is a precedent on the PC side. It convinces me that we do have a chance and we should start a lawsuit. I keep on hearing about a lawsuit but who's going to do it? Has anybody contacted his/her lawyers, and what has been done? --I say at the very least, somebody start a web page dedicated to these heat problems on the d600/600m, etc. And not some geocities site, we'll need a real web page and url. Tell people not to buy dell notebooks ever and tell them how dell has been deliberately ignoring critical problems in their notebooks. Just to let you know, dell has other issues in their notebooks other than heating. The site needs a discussion forum and can be the starting place to organize a lawsuit. My d600 has been the worse purchase I've ever made. 335 - Stephen - 4/6/2005 11:29:39 AM not only have i had the annoyance of the heat problem with my d600, but it has been responsible for killing 2 hard drives in less than 18 months. i can go into detail about how i know that heat was the reason the drives (from different manufacturers) died, but i won't waste the space here. i've owned several dell desktops, and a cpx laptop, and i was always more than satisfied - i still use the 7 year old cpx without problems, but the d600 has been nothing short of a nightmare. they are clearly "not making them like they used to". i bought a d600 without much research because of my good experience with dells in the past. so much for customer loyalty. heat is not the only problem with these machines. after 3 months of normal use, the volume/mute buttons stopped working, and the lights come on and off randomly (this has also been reported in the forums as a common problem). after about 9 months of use, the battery life was down to about 20 minutes (even with the lcd dimmed). now, after about 18 months (on a fresh windows xp sp2 install, and a brand new hard drive), the machine will blue screen about once every 2 weeks, or refuse to show any display after closing the lid (about once a week) - forcing a cold reboot. this machine does not feel like a $2000 top of the line notebook, and something should be done about it. i don't think a class action lawsuit is going too far - dissatisfied users should be seeking some legal remedy for this lemon computer. the apple case is not the only precedent, see http://www.satellite5005settlement.com/. i'm pissed, and it's even more upsetting that dell will not even acknowledge these problems. 336 - Grayfaldor - 4/2/2005 10:29:46 AM 117 - Ruben (msmpm238@yahoo.com) - 9/1/2004 4:10:22 PM I think we should definitely do something about this problem. I bought my D600 just two weeks ago and am already pissed off about the overheating left palm rest problem. I don't think a class action suit is out of the question. Someone said this previously, but it is worth repeating: It is absolutely ridiculous to have to pay well over $1,000.00 for a sub par product such as this one. The fact that people are not reporting this problem in great numbers to Dell means absolutely nothing.----------- It is our right and duty to seek a legal remedy if Dell refuses to acknowledge the problem. --------- The part I put in ------ is what all of you D600 owners should do, get yourselves a Class-Action-Lawsuit Going..NOW 337 - Grayfaldor - 4/2/2005 10:14:29 AM You all could have saved yourself the trouble, had you gone to the Dell Community Forums, prior to buying, to see if there were issues with the models, you wanted to purchase...One thing you have to remember is they are no longer called laptops, but NOTEBOOK computers, this is why you cannot put them on your lap, without a "Notebook Cooler" I do have a Dell 5150(known to have shut off issues, do to dust, but that is bulllshit, I have 4 cats, & dust is everywhere, it never shut down, unless it was due to a hardware related issue.)I've had problems with, but Dell, came out & fixed every issue... It started two months after I bought it back in May of last year(it was the last 5150 to offer the UXGA LCD as well..IT had a 3.0Ghz P4, got so hot, I bought a Laptop cooler 2, from vantec. All was fine until the power switch went, then the kid they sent out, broke the DDR333Mhz, and CPU by touching them ungrounded. Now after replacing the broken switch it still didn't power up, after dell screwed the parts up twice more, they sent out a 3.2Ghz P4, new MOBO, 2x512DDR333Mhz(the extra ram & faster CPU due to their mess-up) a new system fan, Video card, & now it has worked problem free for almost 6 months. I decided, to replace their generic thermal with Artic silver, so I took it apart, & added that, to both the CPU & GPU..Now it runs even cooler..You can make it run even better with the I8KfanGUI 2.20 from: http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html The above program lets you control the fans on the sevral Dell noteboook models that have them, or the one fan, like my 5150 has... there you will also find, speedswitchXP, which is handy for getting your CPU to run at full speed, or half speed, or whatever you want it to do... You have to take Dell product for mobility with a grain of salt, as they made Desktop PC, for most of the companies life, Notebooks, are still being worked on & up[dated, I know when my 5150 is done, I'll be going back to Toshiba, which I've had in the past, & the one I had before this 5150, lasted 8 years, never had a problem not once... 338 - Matt Schiller - 3/31/2005 9:28:18 PM Man, I've had my 8600 for about a year now, and as time went on I started using it more and more. I'm loving the widescreen I got with it as well as the sweet specs, but I noticed that when I rested the laptop on my lap, my left thigh would just start getting really hot. I would seriously prefer to just get it fixed, but I don't know if that will happen. 339 - Jeffrey Ric - 3/31/2005 7:22:17 PM On the 600m the left palm gets real hot, and the touch pad can also heat up. 340 - mugu - 3/31/2005 10:11:59 AM i don deyooooooooooooooo 341 - Sam - 3/30/2005 3:08:26 PM I wish I had read this site before I bought my Dell 600m. I have the same heating issues as all of you. Too bad, I did't return it when I could, and bought an IBM instead. The only fact that I bought a Dell that it was more affordable than an IBM. My HD heats up around 45~50 ^C, and my CPU about 40~50 ^C at full load. But I ususally don't play games for too long as I'm affraid that I'll fry the comp. parts. I gotta get my self a laptop cooler or I'll end up losing my 600m if any parts dies. I don't understand why it wass engineed the way it is, since it makes sense to move the HD out of the way and put it closer to the screen instead of the palm area. So unless you're plannig to burn ur palm or ur thing (if you keep it on ur lap), stay away from Dell laptops, until they fix this issue (redesign their laptops). 342 - Nutz McGriff - 3/30/2005 12:40:18 PM Hey everyone. I've got a D600 that gets ultra-hot at our favorite spot, more so under heavy HD activity. I am very concerned about the future reliability of this machine, so I keep my backups up to date very frequently! Basically I have no faith in a machine that gets this hot. My solution has been to prop up the front edge of the machine about 3/4 inch with a roll of electrical tape when using it on a table. This provides much better ventilation under the machine and has a noticiable lower temperature on the left palm rest. So everyone try propping up the bottom. Dell, WTF is with the heat on this machine, did you test it??? 343 - Mark McCartney. - 3/28/2005 9:02:07 PM This is just ridiculous. My problem goes beyond a warm palm: after about 20 minutes of playing any game, the computer just turns itself off. A few months ago, I could play a big computer game and after about half an hour the game would lock up and slow down, so I'd save and quit and a while later it'd be fine and i could play again. Now, after 15 minutes of a game, the computer doesn't even bother to warn me by slowing down, it just turns itself off. It's absurd. I saw a post on here about battery or powersource making a difference. anyone who can tell me how to fix this would really make my year. thanks. -Mark 344 - M Whitehead - 3/28/2005 12:28:14 PM The D600 definetly has a heat problem. The temp is not only annoying on your left hand but have you placed it on your lap for any extended period of time? The D600 is the standard laptop issued at our company and I've known may people that have been plagued with multiple hard drive failures. 345 - David Grayson - 3/27/2005 12:31:39 PM I bought a D600 6 months ago. I'm on my 3rd hard drive. Do not put any documents in the computer that you are not willing to loose.... 346 - bob pesavento - 3/25/2005 6:31:44 AM UPDATE: Another hard disk replacement on the D600. This time I bought an external 80GB HD so my daughter can back up her work to that at least. Dell support is clueless or is it worthless? And with the recently enacted law in the US Congress, a class action lawsuit is unlikely. Must protect the big boys and too bad for those of us who spend our hard earned money on junk like this. If the unit survives until the extended warrantee is up, I will try to modify it myself to provide cooling to the disk drive, something Dell should be doing. One thing is for sure, I had been a loyal Dell user but no more. 347 - G Simon - 3/24/2005 7:33:30 AM The hot palm is a problem, but the bigger one for me is the fragility of the hard drives. I'm about to get my third hard drive and haven't had the computer for a year yet. It's not because I abuse the machine either. It spends 98% of it's time in a docking station and I only pull it out for traveling. BTW, I've had zero hard drive problem with my old C400, so there is obviously a design problem with the D600. Dell needs to step up and take responsibility. 348 - Steve Kreis - 3/23/2005 3:50:53 PM My D600 has always been hot. To the extent that the palmrest has a visible mark where my hand has been resting and took off the finish. I've owned this laptop for about 1.5 years now and am satisfied with everything but the palmrest heat. Another major heat source seems to be the memory bay at the bottom of the unit, at times it feels like it might burn my legs if on my lap. 349 - Jan-Helge Bergesen - 3/22/2005 1:47:39 AM I concurr. I've a D505 at work, and it's impossible to use for coding without an external keyboard. Not very portable indeed. 350 - amit prasad - 3/19/2005 11:45:47 AM I am watching this page for about a year now. it is pity that heating problem continues to plague customer of DELL laptops. It is amazing that DELL gives a damn to this issue. 351 - Jose Lorenzana - 3/18/2005 8:36:40 AM I have a Dell Latitude 505 and gets really hot in the left palm rest. I regretted buying the laptop. 352 - Jonathan Bolton - 3/16/2005 11:32:58 PM The (partial) home remedy for the D600 heat on the hand problem (YO - 3/9/2005 7:31:10 PM) is to cut a 10cm x 10cm square out of a thick (say 7mm) mouse pad and place it on top of the left-hand palm rest. It heats up too but it does provide some respite. Those who have chosen Dell should bear in mind that, unlike most of the other well-known notebook manufacturers, Dell has a marketing, rather than a technical heritage. 353 - bob pesavento - 3/15/2005 6:09:10 AM The D600 is the approved laptop for Villanova Univ. I got one for my daughter and the disk drive is continually failing because of the heat. This means she cannot keep any valuable data/papers/etc on the drive. This is very disappointing. 354 - Torend - 3/15/2005 5:12:22 AM I have brand new Latitude D505. Same problem - left part of palm rest is hot. It's uncomfotable and irritating. Though machine is good, this flaw makes it peace of crap... 355 - J. Owens - 3/11/2005 5:36:14 AM I purchased my daughter a D600 to take to college in Sept. 2004. She has been having problems with it freezing up and not recognizing the network. The school tech support does Dell warranty work and they told her she needs a new hard drive. Luckily, we bought a 3-year CompleteCare warranty, because this forum leads me to believe we will continue to have problems. I don't believe Dell is being truthful when they say they do not know of hard drive problems with this machine. 356 - Jose Sandoval - 3/10/2005 2:37:57 PM YO, you asked: I read in an early post that some one applied thermal/aluminum tape to the top of the HD to insulate the heat a bit. Has anyone else done this? Is this effective and safe for the notebook? I tried it. And it doesn't work. And I don't think it's safe for the drive. I.e. An insulator just bounces the heat back to drive, thus making it even hotter. Also, the palm rest eventually gets hot again. Home made remedy: call Dell and return the computer and get a ThinkPad :) 357 - YO - 3/9/2005 7:31:10 PM This junk gets pretty hot on the left side. Does anyone have a home made remedy for this? I read in an early post that some one applied thermal/aluminum tape to the top of the HD to insulate the heat a bit. Has anyone else done this? Is this effective and safe for the notebook? Let me know! 358 - Mehreen Hosain - 3/9/2005 9:11:28 AM Just bought a D600 as it offered a lot for its price range and I've had an Inspiron which has done well for 7 years! Immediately noticed the heating problem. Contacted Tech Support by email and was told this was normal. The heat on the wrist pad does not bother me overly, but the possible impact on the machine does bother me. 359 - Sean Siler - 3/7/2005 7:12:01 PM D600 with 2GB of RAM, I lost 2 hard drives in three weeks because of heat. This needs to be corrected. 360 - timothy chua - 3/7/2005 5:29:43 PM I am having the same problem with my dell D800. 361 - Charles - 3/4/2005 7:36:00 PM We have 12 d600 and today we experienced the 8th hard drive failure! All had Hitachi hard drives. Dell says that they know of no issue with this machine and premature hard drive failures. They replaced the drives under warranty, but that doesn't make up for lost productivity. 362 - BartDart - 3/2/2005 7:21:43 AM My M60 have the same problem. The hard drive is having a hard time. I complained and Dell gave me a new one ... same problem! So I bought a small external Zippy keyboard - very cool with blue background light so I can work in the dark ;) Now I save my hand but the disk I don´t know? 363 - Robin Warbey - 2/24/2005 1:02:08 PM The heat is a real pain and a disappointment because the D600 is otherwise a great machine. I rely on my machine and worry about the longevity of the drive operating at the extreme end of its temperature rating. I love my Dell, but this is a fly in the ointment. I wish Dell would address this issue. 364 - Jonathan Bolton - 2/22/2005 5:23:16 PM The heat coming through the palm rest makes the D600 virtually unusable. Dell should perform an immediate recall and either replace affected users' notebooks with an equivalent or superior model without this problem or rectify the heat issue. 365 - Tayo Akinwande - 2/22/2005 2:03:25 AM I am a computer engineer. I came across this problem through one of my clients that uses D600. I tried to explain my finding to her but she wouldn't listen. All she wanted was the solution to her system heating problem. Now she is greatly upset as the hot part on the left side of the palm rest; above the hard drive makes her really uncomfortable. I wish Dell can provide quick solution to this problem 366 - Steven Gill - 2/21/2005 1:03:14 PM Dell D600 laptops are junk. They overheat sometimes for no reason and their graphics cards can't even handle a 2d sidescroller. Its the worst computer I've ever had. 367 - upset customer - 2/18/2005 2:01:20 PM Looks like the new d610's have fixed the hot palm rest. http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=64169 Dell seems to have acknowledged the heat problem, at least implicitly. I wonder if it's due to better heat shields or different hard drives. The thing that puzzles me then is that those are easily implemented in the d600. If it's not those two, then it has to be the design, but the design looks the same as the hard drive is still in the same place. Maybe there's airflow to the hd now. Otherwise if it's just better heat shields, comfort will come at the cost of dead hard drives. No matter what, d600 customers got screwed. 368 - Vincent T - 2/16/2005 10:06:42 PM I own a D600, one of the earliest batch of the model. The palm rest gets hot even when I use it for normal word processing, not to mention if I use it for some heavy duty work. The heat is getting irritating, and it often makes my palm red, not to mention the pain it inflict. I have tried different laptop before, Asus, Toshiba, Compaq, and none of them are experiencing the problem like this. the heat are getting unbearable. 369 - NV - 2/12/2005 9:55:03 PM I have a dell 8600, similar to the 600, and my handrest also gets very hot. Sometimes, it gets so hot that my battery starts to overheat, and a yellow light flashes at the battery meter. Dell told me that I need a new battery (which, by the way, can explode) and that it is not covered by my extended warranty, since the battery is not part of the computer. Funny, that when I bought the computer, they did not charge me for the battery seperately, so I did not think that it was an external component. Thank you for logging this problem; I was begining to think I was nuts. Next time, I am determined to go IBM, even if the chinese own it. Good Luck, 370 - Matt Trentini - 2/11/2005 4:39:25 AM We bought around thirty Latitude D600's at work. Although they perform very well, they do have heat issues as everyone has mentioned, particularly when connected to mains power. The left-hand side gets uncomfortably hot. Obviously having the unit run under such conditions places questions on the longevity of the device... Also, the power management is quite poor in the sense that if "maximum performance" is selected and the CPU is under high load then it gets hotter and hotter and hotter. Finally, when it reaches about 72 centigrade the machine shuts down to protect itself. But the power management unit should not allow it to get that high - even if high performance is required. Note that if "maximum battery" is selected then the CPU doesn't get hot at all. We'd hesitate purchasing Dell laptops again given these design flaws. 371 - tantrix - 2/10/2005 11:37:55 AM My 600m is stuck at 600Mhz. I've tried everything. After about 20 minutes into a movie, the processor goes down even more.. the temperatures crop upto 60-65 degrees and the whole notebook feels HOT. I've called the tech support many times.. but the folks over there have no idea. They told me that I have "too many programs" installed while I just did a clean install of XP. 372 - Jose Sandoval - 2/9/2005 2:03:42 PM What's interesting about the D600s is that the issue NEVER comes up from professional reviewers. I.e. Magazines reviewers. I would wait from "real" user to review the machine to make a decision. 373 - upset customer - 2/8/2005 10:58:29 PM Dell's launching it's new line of laptops based on sonoma. The d600's sonoma equivalent is the d610. The hard drive is still under the left palm rest, but reviews don't indicate it as a problem, as they did with the d600. It could be because an sata drive is used. If dell has fixed the issue, it implies they knew the problem existed and they weren't willing to fix it for their old line. Not good. 374 - casey - 2/8/2005 7:13:57 AM A piping hot Dell Latitude D505! Ouch! 375 - Mad. - 2/3/2005 5:07:48 PM Yes i just purchased a inspiron 600m. It seems that the HD is right under the left palm rest and it gets HOT- around 56-62*C . Im somewat worried this could lead to future hardware failure. Now if this seems hot...the ram is aobut 10x hotter....like around 80-100*C. I'm very worried that this laptop is gona die very soon...I am very disspointed in the enginearing of this laptop...or "keep on desk computer" should i call it. for it's too hot to even touch.(non-the-less put on ur lap) 376 - Jose Sandoval - 2/3/2005 1:19:01 PM Upset Customer, You are right. If we wait to get 1000 entries, it will be to late. So, if any of you (new or old signees) want to take up this page and send it to Michael Dell and try to escalete the problem, you are welcome to do so. I'm guessing that if we all send him a copy of all this entries, then something may get done...I'll give it a shot - Good luck...And BTW, get ThinkPad :) 377 - upset customer - 2/2/2005 10:14:43 PM I use my computer a lot and I can actually see the discoloration caused by sweat from my left palm/hand. Never expected my notebook to actually change color from of all things, sweat!! I guess its also a testament to the poor quality of the notebook. I regularly get up to 55C under load and 60C for longer periods. Unacceptable for a corporate notebook. I have the fujitsu mht2040ah, 40gb 5400rpm drive. Specifications at http://www2.fcpa.fujitsu.com/sp_support/ext/mobile/manuals/mht5400rpm-manual.pdf. 60C is the upper operating limit for my hard drive. I bet a safer limit would be more like 45C. Another problem I've been getting is that I regularly get slow downs on my computer after about an hour of so of work. CPU temps get up to about 64C for a period before my cpu seems to actually shut down parts to protect itself. And remember it's all on a pentium m!! This is something I would expect from a p4-m. Dell has made mistakes with this notebook and wish I had never bought it. BTW Jose, at this rate the d600 will be old news when 1000 entries have been made, and the people who care about this will have fixed the problem in their way as you have done by buying the t40p. 378 - A developer - 2/2/2005 12:19:58 PM Yea, does anybody know at what temp human flesh starts to cook? Well mine is about 10 degrees hotter than that. Go W! 379 - Nathaniel Hammond - 2/1/2005 2:28:31 AM Have a D505 for 6 months and never had a problem with the 20G HD that it came with. I put in a Hitachi 60GB 7200RPM HD and it is too hot. I installed the program from http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/ and now run the fan on high. I also propped up my laptop on some chop sticks. HD now appears to have leveled out at 44C. I feared for the life of my computer with it that hot. It ain't right. I am thinking about getting slower HD with the same capacity. I hope this helps. I use PC for develpment all day. Can't have hot. Maybe going to look for a desktop. I thought I had the perfect laptop. Guess not. 380 - Basil Brush - 1/31/2005 5:23:52 AM Same problem (over-heating) with a couple of C840 Dell Latitude laptops. Hard disk temperature > 60 deg Also intermittent operation of CDROM. 381 - Ken B - 1/30/2005 7:36:25 PM Michael Dell should be embarrassed to put his family name on such crap. I have always considered the Latitude series to be a “workhorse.” What a disappointment. Business class laptops should not force the users to stop working on their computers after 30 minutes of use. I understand new product issues but only as long as they are addressed. Lacks of acknowledgement of this severe problem, and failure to resolve matter will definitely cost Dell millions. Latitude serious laptops were THE standard in mobile business computing – no longer! At over $2500 after custom options, I expect more. If Dell ever ends up reading this I would like for them to know that I will NEVER buy or recommend Dell products. What a shame. 382 - Ken B - 1/30/2005 7:33:29 PM Michael Dell should be embarrassed to put his family name on such crap. Boy what a mistake; around 10 have already suffered major crashing / hd corruption / hd failure due to the heat. The hard drives are getting well above the operating range which has surely voided the manufacturers warranty on the drive... (Already had to have about 10 motherboards swapped by Dell too due to possibly unrelated issues with the onboard bluetooth) 385 - Chad Lytle - 1/26/2005 11:25:22 PM Ordered the D600 and 600m. Returned the 600m and tried to return the D600...but Dell won't accept it at 3 days past the 21 day return period (despite TS telling me it wasn't a problem). Sent it back and TS replaced several parts, but the left palmrest is still 100+ degrees. Last time I'll ever reccomend Dell notebooks to customers. 386 - Drake Thomas - 1/25/2005 6:45:16 PM continuation from last. Here is my solution and possible fix. For my enviroment (hospital), I will no longer buy the D600 for production but will stick with the D400 because it seems to have no problems whatsoever. For the 10 D600 laptops that do have reliablity problems, this is our solution: As soon as we can or when the 30 GB drives die, it will be replaced with a smaller (20GB) lower RPM drive. I have a bunch of 20GB drives from Fujitsu parts laptops that work very well in the dell that have already done 24/7 service for a year. Also, believe it or not I manufactured a heat sink / shield between the top of the HD and the upper case which is designed to absorb the heat from the drive and transfer it to the touchpad area, keyboard and PCMCIA slot case. THe material I used is Aluminum tape used for ducting in your house (not duct tape). Also, there is a thin layer of insulation between the two layers of Aluminum right under that wrist pad that really helps the insulation of the laptop. Under the SANDRA burn in wizard at 100% CPU and 100 HD activity for over two hours the max temperature of the HD is 41 degrees C and if feels only slightly warm to the touch now. Much better which puts the drives back into spec with Seagate numbers (50C). I would recommend this fix to anyone who has their own $ and confort investing in a Dell laptop and please contact me for pictures if you would like. I don't mind opening up a laptop because we do this all the time to support a couple hundred that we have in production. But I think you are also out of luck if you have a high speed - high capacity drive but the heat sink / shield may solve your problems, not to mention fear about voiding warranties. Happy cooking..... 387 - Drake Thomas - 1/25/2005 6:34:49 PM We have about 20 D600 laptops in production. They were tested early on with about 5 users. They did very well and I had few complaints about the hot palm region and reliabilty was excellent. They were configured with 256 MB ram and a 20GB drive. Recently we ordered 10 more laptops but only the 30GB Momentus by Segate was offered. Also, they have 512 MB of RAM. They are used in a production hospital enviroment where they are on 24 /7 in use all the time. Probably a severe situation none the less. Of the origional laptops all have been trouble free, but of the last 10 I have replace 2 motherboards and RMA 3 Harddrives. 388 - sravan - 1/25/2005 1:53:08 PM I have posted about the samething in dell forums, and even suggested changes to the best of my knowledge. But seems like dell wants to see cheap and make profits by volume rather than fixing problems. Its suprising that D600, inspiron 600m are sold with huge discounts for $750-$1000 range. 389 - Roy - 1/23/2005 12:46:58 AM Dell has no engineer. They just get some laptops in Taiwan and mark it as Dell. I had a T40 already, PM 1.5, 1GB 60GB 7200rpm. It runs so cool and quiet. The stupid D600 that I just received was terrible. PM 1.7, 1GB, 40GB 7200RPM. It is so hot. I can't even use it. No more dell laptop for me. period. 390 - Roy - 1/23/2005 12:46:52 AM Dell has no engineer. I own it for a month, it is very hot. very big problem 392 - Wolfgang Mueller - 1/20/2005 9:03:23 PM My brandnew (Jan 2005) Latitude D505 gets very warm under my palms, even though the Intel Centrino was supposed to run cool. The D505 is also not nearly as quiet as it could be. 393 - Jose Idrobo - 1/15/2005 5:49:12 PM I have a Dell Inspiron 600m and the left palmrest gets hot very quickly. 394 - Brian - 1/15/2005 5:09:10 PM I have not been through the enaginizeing process of being too; gosh darn hot with the component. But I have been through many hours of not haveing the customer satisfaction that we all deserve!!!!!!!! 395 - Chris - 1/14/2005 11:31:40 AM I have had my Dell D600 Laptop for almost year and 1/2 now and i hate it. This peice gets so very hot and is so annoying. Also when im playing a game the cpu gets so hot that the game actually slows down terribly for 10 minutes until it cools down enough to run again. This happens multiple times a game and is very annoying. Dell apparenty configured early models such as mine, 1.6 ghz to cut cpu speed in half when it gets hot instead of disapating the heat. fuck dell. I do not reccomend this laptop to anyone it SUCKS. 396 - jun wen - 1/12/2005 7:49:58 PM my dell is hot and i should get a targus cooling mod for free (sponsored by Dell) 397 - Matt Lindsay - 1/12/2005 3:12:07 PM D600 fan kicks into high gear when processing PDF files; 2 seconds later the system locks up.... On the phone with Dell right now. I am sure they will ask me to disassemble it...the morons. I have had nothing but problems with all the D600s and D800s I have bought...and have lost some credibility in the process....thanks Mike! 398 - Gene Collins - 1/12/2005 10:21:38 AM my dell latitude gets extremely hot, and I wonder if this will engage in a more serious problem later. 399 - Anonymouse - 1/12/2005 8:25:33 AM I have a Dell D600 and it seriously gets hot to the point that the small metal plate underneath the laptop melted and fused to a cable it was lying on. It's a good thing it wasn't a power cable or I'd really have something to complain about. 400 - Larry Aucoin - 1/9/2005 5:43:48 PM This is terrible. I can no longer use the laptop! 401 - Bill Little - 1/7/2005 2:40:34 PM If I can stand the pain of the heat for more than an hour I eventually get the blue screen of death. I am convinced this is due to the heat. Dell seems to have little concern and just keeps making me do more and more diagnostics and updates. 402 - Patrick - 1/7/2005 4:19:47 AM Hi there, I got this new Dell D600. It really getes dam hot on the left side. The notebook has to be running for like 9 hrs a day cus I am in operations and after 3 hrs you cannot keep your hand on the palm rest. You have a bread toast on if you like LOL. It is a great laptop will not deny it but the heat gets you irritated. I am planning to sell this cute machine off and buy a VAIO. Cannot take the heat any more 403 - Project - 1/5/2005 2:01:39 PM I own a Dell 1100 it has given me nothing but trouble. The temperature it would reach would literally scorch my skin. 404 - jmb - 12/28/2004 4:07:11 PM problem with dell d600 heat Dell should be ashamed at not addressing this issue as so many people have pointed it out. 405 - Mir Tariq - 12/27/2004 11:11:46 PM 600m crashes (blue windows screen)due to overheating. 406 - Anonymous - 12/17/2004 4:46:52 AM WHY IS DELL COMPANY IGNORING THIS PAGE ? 407 - Stewat - 12/15/2004 6:08:38 AM I have a D800 that I can't use cause the heat! 408 - Jim - 12/6/2004 10:33:02 AM OK I thought I was the only one, and it only started happening recently. 409 - Mike F - 11/29/2004 5:38:09 PM I got a hot d600! Left wrist...60gb Fujitsu HD.... 410 - Sowmy Srinivasan - 11/25/2004 7:06:07 AM I have a similar problem with my D600. It gets so much that you could cook an omelette on it. Sowmy 411 - Mike - 11/22/2004 1:38:58 AM I found that putting something under each footpad to lift the laptop up from the desk, to allow better airflow, somewhat helps this problem. It almost eliminates the problems I've been having to deal with when playing CPU-intensive applications. I'm considering buying the Targus ChillHUB, which adds even more cooling power to the underside of any laptop @ http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=AWE01US 412 - Richard Jhang - 11/18/2004 8:45:15 AM I can't stand the heat on the left palm side. I returning this laptop to the corporate support. I wish we'd stop buying this computer from Dell altogether. 413 - Milos - 11/17/2004 1:56:40 PM Thank you all for preventing me to buy Dell Latitude. It looks great, but I will hold with my purchase since I use keyboard a lot. 414 - Johan - 11/14/2004 8:03:05 AM I travel a lot and I use my dell c400 at least 5-6h every day, 7 days a week. My big problem is that I have to carry a keyboard with me since the heat from my laptop is more than my hands can cope with. It's very sad since I do like my computer and I've not had any other problems with it. However, I doubt that I will buy a new Dell if this problem cannot be solved. At the moment I'm looking at IBM machines that don't seem to have the same problem 415 - Lasse - 11/13/2004 10:53:45 PM Just upgraded to 1gb ram (2x512 mb) in my inspiron 8600, very bad decision. After playing for ½ hour the plastic cover covering the memory gets so hot that it can not be touched by human hands. Completely ridiculous. Just send e-mail to Dell, hope they have a solution. My operating temperature is around 30C, which probably makes the heat issue even worse. 416 - Kandie White - 11/11/2004 2:35:04 PM Hi... I've had my D600 for about 3 or 4 months and for the past couple of weeks my keypad is unresponsive on and off....While in the docking station is works pretty much of the day.. I reboot maybe 2 to 3 time due to the keys changing to hot keys or something odd like that....when working without the docking station the keys are totally unresponsive... the number keys at the top work on and off.. the letter keys do not work at all... same with the ctrl alt del keys...So of course I can't log in... this is a corp computer Help... Has anyone else experienced this problem? What did you do to resolve the problem? Thanks 417 - Jolly - 11/10/2004 9:17:18 AM They still havn't fixed the problem - bought my 600m a month ago, I've seen the HD as hot as 60 celsius, and the memory bay as hot as 59 - and then the system starts locking up. 418 - Mike - 11/9/2004 2:09:10 PM I own a 600m from August 2003, and I've noticed the overheating issue with regards to the left palm. Also, for that matter, various overheating issues have begun to arise, especially when running games or other high-performance applications. The LCD screen is starting to die-off now (showing red-horizontal lines on anything that is black). And I'm planning to return it for either something else, or a brand new one (that's what my $300 waranty package better get me). The balls one of the dell support bastards are! They told me to open up the laptop and 'wiggle' a monitor cable to get it to work! Of course, it only worked temporarily. I love their attitude to technical problems. This time I'm not taking a shortcut as an answer. 419 - joebloggs - 11/6/2004 6:53:33 PM The memory is much cooler if you guys have one piece instead of two. Plus, longer battery life with just one. Just a consideration. 420 - AMEXplat - 11/6/2004 11:07:37 AM I own a Inspiron 600m and the left palmrest gets hot very quickly after startup and remains hot. I'm trying hard to tolerate this without being dissapointed (good days and bad days) and am not sure why this allowable. I realize that notebooks get hot, but why not design hotspots away from the region where the palms always rest? I strongly urge that Dell rectify my discontent on this issue. 421 - Walter silva - 11/6/2004 10:53:23 AM We own two Latitude D600 in Brazil. Dell support does not know what to do about the heat problem 422 - Trond - 11/4/2004 1:22:29 PM Agree with Dean below. It's more of a long-time cooking than an actual burn. I've actually glued styrofoam sheets to the chassis to shield my wrist. The hard-disk now runs even hotter (from 58 to 63 deg celsius during normal use), but at least my wrist is not medium done by the end of the day... 423 - Dean - 11/4/2004 3:48:56 AM I have received a new D600 as a company laptop for software development. I use it all day as a desktop replacement and it gets very hot. I find myself placing my wrist on cold parts of the car on the way home to try to get rid of the feeling of being cooked alive. Just typing this email has the disk running at 55dec C, and yesterday I had it reporting 64deg C. This is a ridiculus situation. Some active cooling would have solved the problem. 424 - stisev - 10/31/2004 8:42:08 PM I own a Inspiron 8600 with the Hitachi 7K60 and I am experiencing the same burning hot temperatures on the left palm region of my Dell Inspiron 8600. I hope Dell does something about this. 425 - Dave M - 10/29/2004 4:30:32 PM I have a Dell D600 and the memory cover is 123 degrees F right now with the fan running on high. Left palm rest is warm, but not uncomfortably so. My office is cold so I like that warmth. The memory burns my leg, though. 426 - carl - 10/29/2004 1:40:31 PM Just got my 600m. left palmrest got warm after half an hour use, feel uncomfortable to typing but not too hot. Considering return it 427 - Krishan Agarwal - 10/29/2004 12:00:52 PM Friends, I just bought 600M I'm seeing heating problem, but not as intense as described. The reason some of you are having heating problem on left side of palm rest is "Hard Drive" the bigger HDD (capacity) you will have the the more heat will be generated. Older model had a mika sheet there but now dell has improved it with a metel connector that spreads heart to PCMCIA cage and a heat sink just underneath the mouse pad. Lap heating it's becasue of Memory the more dimm (even if you have 2 128 MB slots installed) you will have more heat there. solution is go for one Dimm only it won't eliminate compeletly but will reduce it upto an extend. Check just below the desplay where they have "Dell" writen (above power button). it is getting really hot even hotter than palm rest and lap. is it the condition with all 600m I checked with some coworkers they don't have such problem but their model is 8600. But another guy with 600m noticed when I asked him. so just wanted to confirm is it a problem with all 600m or just my computer. I can understand heating at palm rest and underneath because of circuit and chips. but Screen it's hotter than Memory doesn't make sense. 428 - Emily - 10/26/2004 1:50:55 PM I agree! It gets hot. 429 - bunkster - 10/23/2004 3:37:31 PM D800 overheats and blue screens. What's the deal DELL?? 430 - Dawna Harty - 10/20/2004 8:41:38 PM I agree! Way too hot! 431 - Baris Cagdaser - 10/19/2004 4:53:44 PM I have been using a 600m for more than 8 months now. Regarding the heating palm rest, I have noticed some. But mine is not that hot. Still, I understand the what it means thank to my display. The bottom part of the rim, where the DELL logo is, gets so hot that I can barely touch. And a few days ago screen broke. For about a day, it just showed fuzzy static. Anyway, HD is not the only heating part in this machine. 432 - Baris Cagdaser - 10/19/2004 4:53:26 PM I have been using a 600m for more than 8 months now. The part I'm concerned about was the Memory Door. It gets incredibly hot and hurts my legs when it is on my lap. Now I ask you, should be able to use a LAPtop, on your LAP without getting burned? 434 - Ben Haidri - 10/13/2004 6:11:29 PM It's a known isssue. I've heard that Dell has a utility/patch to improve the situation; I'm about to go searching for it... There's also a fan utility from a German site: http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html that I've heard will help by simply allowing you to control when the fan runs and may help with overall heat disapation. 435 - Sophia Lee - 10/12/2004 9:16:46 PM I got my dell 600m about 1 month ago. i had used my boyfriend's d600 and noticed the high heat, but decided to purchase the 600m anyway b/c of the great deal that i got and the fact that i had a dell desktop before and was very happy with its performance. so far the heat has been a slight nuisance. but i think i am trying not to worry too much about it and drive myself crazy as a result. i could just be trying to ignore the obvious tho. the annoying part of the heat, in my opinion, is that it makes my hands hot and causes my hands to perspire a bit. gross, i know, but i worry that the oils in my fingers transfer to the keys which will transfer to the screen and ruin it. another annoying thing is that it worries me to run the laptop while its on a surface such as the carpet or on my bed as there doesn't seem to be enough room for the heat to escape. also, i obviously worry about the laptop overheating and also about burning myself. i think that this laptop could get hot enough to do that. maybe it is less likely with an adult, but probable with a child or infant. dell should really do something about this as many customers seem to be getting disgruntled. 436 - Neil Desai - 10/12/2004 11:17:07 AM my d600 left-side palm rest is unbearably hot, as we already have established. also, there are some noises that come from that area every once in a while - it freezes the computer. if i bang on the left side hard enough, the noise will stop. guessing its more hard drive problems. 437 - J. Moehrke - 10/9/2004 3:27:37 AM YES, I opened it yesterday and thought even after 2 hours, gee this is so hot. But not only the palm itself feels uncomfortable to me but also I have a weired feeling in the left half of my body. Like somone mentioned before, I'm not sure that this is healthy. However, does anybody know if there is a remedy? Other hard drive, a metal plate, a connection with the fan? DELL say they won't take back the computer because I'm a business customer. This is rediculous. None of my colleagues will buy a DELL anymore!! 438 - S. Steingart - 9/23/2004 1:21:28 PM Latitude D600 with 512mb memory, 1.4m processor, and 5400 rpm hdd is my latest Dell at work. Two previous Dell laptops were c600 and c610. While both of those could get uncomfortably warm, it was not where my left hand rested, so I could type comfortably for hours without heating my hand. The D600 is quite uncomfortable to use for any extended period. I view this as a serious negative, 439 - Enrique del Valle - 9/23/2004 2:40:00 AM True indeed. Way too hot. Specially for left handed people when it comes to use the touchpad. I am very concerned about the fact of this being healthy or not. 440 - Jim Larsen - 9/22/2004 6:31:58 AM I have a D600 with a 40GB Seagate st94811A. Got it new 1 month ago. I have seen HDD temps over 60C! (This is way above Seagate's published limits!) And this just doing normal word processing. 441 - Rohan - 9/21/2004 4:48:52 AM I purchased a inspiron 600m havnt doen serious work untill now but i think i have major problems too. I have a 60 GB hard drive and see that it gets crazy hot!! real hot !!! Can i get it replaced? 442 - Robert White - 9/20/2004 9:53:02 PM I bought a Dell Latitude D600 through the college I was going to during the 2003-2004 School Year. I have noticed many problems with this laptop right from the beginning: 1. 40GB 5400-rpm hard-drive generates exponential amounts of heat. 2. Memory cover on underside of laptop gets extremely hot. 3. Even when the laptop is overly warm, sometimes the cooling fan does not run, the only time that the fan runs at full speed is during the dell diagnostic tests, and I know this because that is the only time it is fairly audible. 4. Many games will not run correctly at all, when they will run on other laptops with the same graphics card and video memory. I don't think that the Processor or Memory has anything to do with it as I have a Pentium-M 1.7 with 512MB of RAM and I can run the games on even Pentium 3 Desktop machines with integrated graphics and only 256MB of RAM. Note: I originally did not buy the laptop for games, but felt that it would be a good machine as I got the version of the laptop with the 64MB ATI Radeon Mobility, and got rid of my AMD Athlon XP 2200+ Desktop thinking that this would be an ok replacement. Sad thing is, I have had experience with many Centrino-based machines, this is the only one that had problems running the games, even some of the laptops with the Intel Graphics Chipsets ran better. I have had one motherboard and two hard drives fail on me since I bought the machine, and feel that it's truly unacceptable, but as dell doesn't want to accept the fact that it's a design flaw in these laptops, I am out the money I paid on it unless I sell it, and truthfully I know that I will not get the amount I paid for it. I have put too much money into the machine to allow it to go down in flames, FIX THE GODDAMN THING DELL!!!!! 443 - John Finnan - 9/17/2004 1:25:27 AM We just got a bunch of new laptops in the office. We're moving them to the kitchen to save on the electric bill. 444 - kavita kumari - 9/15/2004 11:04:59 AM I purchased a new 600m in Aug 2004 and found the left palmrest heating within few minutes of using it. It is shocking that company like DELL is ignoring this issue and is selling the machine with blissful ignorance. I bought a 1.7 GHz/2MB, 512 MB Ram a very good machine but useless because of heating issue. I am returning the machine now. 445 - Brian Shin - 9/14/2004 11:06:25 AM I have been using a brand new Latitude D600 last 8 months. The Dell technician replaced the motherboard because it was fried out by the great heat generated. With the new Mother Dell, I may need to attach some ice pack underneath of the laptop to prevent from losing it again. This time I need pay for the MOTHER! 446 - Brian Shin - 9/14/2004 10:57:32 AM I have been using a brand new Latitude D600 last 8 months. The Dell technician replaced the motherboard because it was fried out by the great heat generated. With the new Mother Dell, I may need to attach some ice pack underneath of the laptop to prevent from losing it again. This time I need pay for the MOTHER! 447 - Norbert Voelker - 9/9/2004 2:52:55 PM Still a problem with D505. It is probably ok if you are a user who does not use the keyboard much but if you are a software developer or do a lot of text processing, then it is extremely irritating to have your left wrist constantly heating up. 448 - Kevin NIcholson - 9/3/2004 8:36:41 AM Great machine but by the end of the day my left hand has to hover over the plam rest - shame really 449 - once a dell user - 9/2/2004 9:37:21 AM True. My dell laptop began giving problems after about 4months of usage. Not that I have stressing the system out, I have used it for what I consider the most basic of PC functions eg documentation and presenatations. Not a single game have been played on it.. Initially I thought the problem was due to a faulty hard-disk, but after reading the replies on this forum, I have realized that the problem may have been due to the heat that the laptop generates. I should have thought of heating problems, as the salesperson at the shop specifically recommended getting an external cooling pad for my laptop because of a "slight over heating" problem. 450 - Ryan Smith - 9/1/2004 11:46:16 PM I just got my 8600 the other day and I must agree with you all, the left palm rest is way to hot. Especially during gaming. Its a shame to because other then that I really like the 8600. 451 - Ruben - 9/1/2004 4:10:22 PM I think we should definitely do something about this problem. The fact that people are not reporting this problem in great numbers to Dell means absolutely nothing. It is our right and duty to seek a legal remedy if Dell refuses to acknowledge the problem. 452 - J. Benjamin Winburn - 9/1/2004 2:57:59 PM Hot left palm. VERY unsatisfied. 453 - Vishu - 8/25/2004 2:35:38 PM Hi guys, I have the same problam with my Insprion 600M, i just bought 4 months back and now i feel it is really becoming hot to the left hand side and when it gets hot i feel some one has left a hot frying pan underneth my palm. It also gives strange error messages when it gets hot and the IE wosend work. I am planning to call dell and ask for replace with a nother system but will they do it.please let me know if any one has any idea what are they gona say. Thanks Visu 454 - Kirk Robinson - 8/25/2004 10:04:57 AM As a result of the heat from my DELL laptop D600 my hardrive is shot. The Latitude series is a poorly made series of laptops and the D600 is no exception. They are also overpriced. Alternatives for buying computers are limited, but I would suggest trying to buy a desktop, not a DELL. 455 - Law Student, Pacific Northwest - 8/22/2004 10:16:48 PM I just opted to return my D600 on the last day of the Total Satisfaction Guarantee Policy Dell includes with this laptop. It performed well enough, but the left palm rest heat was so aggravating to my wrist, prone to swelling, I simply could not live with it. As a first time Dell buyer, I opted not to take the $200 credit toward another Dell the customer service rep offered. I just thought, if $1800 doesn't get one a machine designed for human beings, why should I think their other models are any better? Am I wrong? 456 - Hugo P - 8/11/2004 11:57:49 AM I have a Dell Latitude D600 and it is not only very HOT it's also extremely unrealiable I haven't even had it for a year and within that time it has needed a new motherboard and 2 new hard drives. Don't buy one they are CRAP. 457 - Gang Wang - 8/10/2004 1:40:15 AM I own a D600. Although it's running fine, the heat on the left palm rest is way too uncomfortable. I hope Dell could recall and solve this design flaw soon. 458 - Geert Theys - 8/9/2004 6:59:21 AM I got a dell D800 and it has the same heating problem. I'm a real fan of IBM T40 and hope my company goes IBM next time. 459 - XX - 8/8/2004 6:10:24 PM D600 is a good machine, besides this heat issue. So anyone tried to replace the hard drive with a less-heat-generator? It's not necessary a slower one. I read post reporting some 7200rpm disks are much cooler than the one came with Dell. Anyone here has any recommendation. 460 - Steven Schulz GERMANY - 8/7/2004 8:38:09 AM I got the D800. The left palm rest is getting real HOT. It gets on my nerves!!! What can I do about it? Is there a Patch or something? 461 - Robert Lawrence - 8/5/2004 5:48:08 AM We have many D600 latitude laptops at the office and all of them have the heat issue on the left palm rest. My laptop has another heat issue, located just under the memory door. I ran some tests and clocked the tempture at 140.5 F. Man, thats hot! 462 - David Rinker - 8/4/2004 9:51:06 PM I just bought a new Dell Inspiron 600m and am returning it within 21 days because it is unuseable due to the heat in the left palm rest. It was a colossial waste of time to price, buy and configure this laptop. I wish that I had researched the forums to learn about the heat problems prior to buying the Dell. 463 - Colin Vermander - 8/3/2004 6:57:45 PM we have 6 dell latitude d600s at my office and all of them have the same heat issue with the left palm rest. Have tried different HDs on all of them and no change. Seems to be a design problem. 464 - Liang Zhu - 8/2/2004 4:29:33 PM Latitude D600 1.6G PentiumM + Dell1350Wireless + 40G5400rpm + 640RAM. Arrived in July. Hot indeed. Then found tons of D600 heat issues at google. I wish I knew it before. Will not recommend D600 to others. Final thought, maybe I should use it in cold winter outside. Then I would feel better. 465 - Rick Scott - 7/29/2004 8:52:24 PM Have a new dell 8600, and the left side of the palm rest is so hot, that I now regret buying it. Both fan diagnostics run with no errors. My left hand is medium-rare! 466 - Darren Louie - 7/24/2004 7:34:53 PM Yeah its too hot. Its so stupid. You would of thought they would fix this by now. Its a total inconvienence. 467 - Frans Blank - 7/20/2004 3:06:47 PM If I leave my hand on the left palm rest while typing for half an hour on the D600, I feel it the rest of the day in my left hand. Thank god that at the office I have a stand with a normal keyboard. When working at other places I take my keyboard with me (sic!). And if I really need to type on the keyboard of the D600, I do not rest my hand on the palmrest. Letting the harddisk go to sleep after 3 minutes also seems to keep the thing somewhat cooler. 468 - Jonathan Speigner - 7/19/2004 8:25:03 AM The heat on the plam rest is a big problem, there is no way to use the think for more than a hour. Dell needs to do something about this. 469 - Shawn Riegsecker - 7/18/2004 9:18:19 PM I've always enjoyed Dell laptops, but the hotness on my left palm is ridiculous. They should offer us either a solution or a refund or credit towards another machine. I'll stay with Dell, but I need a different system. 470 - Mark - 7/15/2004 10:55:11 AM right from the beginning my d600 was unbearable. I go to school in Virginia and in the summer I couldn't workj for more than 5 minutes at the comp without having to cool off my hands. I've never been more disappointed. Great machine, but one MAJOR flaw. It's no coincidence so many people have this problem. I can't believe Dell still after over a year and a half hasn't addressed this problem. 471 - Leonid Morozovskiy - 7/9/2004 5:44:37 PM my D600 certainly does get hot, and especially during some hard drive-intensive applications (games mostly), they momentarily slow down while the hard drive cools off a little. major annoyance. 472 - CJ - 6/29/2004 8:39:07 PM The Dell D600 laptop I am using gets really hot too. Its sad that our company spent so much money buying dozen or so laptops but we can't really use them for programming. 473 - S.K. - 6/18/2004 4:55:27 PM Actually... I have a 600m, which is of approximately the same design. 474 - Shaun K. - 6/18/2004 4:53:22 PM No only does it get hot, but after awhile in intensive applications (games like Spliter Cell 1, programs like Reason 2.5), it just plain overheats and the processor seems to lag to the point of near freeze. I could care less about the palm rest actually... but the overheating concerns me greatly. 475 - TerrorChild - 6/13/2004 10:33:31 AM Yes, i do own a Latitude D800 and the left palm rest does get hot... 476 - Kirk Brocas - 6/9/2004 8:12:37 AM Palm rest gets so hot and uncomfortable, I am actively discouraging other staff at work getting this model. Dell, is IS a problem - fix it! 477 - Leanne Joye - 5/17/2004 9:11:48 AM The heat makes it lock up to I believe. 478 - Nadav Dafni - 5/9/2004 3:33:56 PM It's so HHHHHHHooooot!!! Please, do something!! 479 - Derrell Simpson - 5/8/2004 6:03:04 PM D-800 with the hitachi DK23EB and a pretty serious heat issue. touchpad stinks as well 480 - Ingo Heinrich - 5/2/2004 6:34:56 AM Brand new D600 already hitting the 50C. I'm especially worried about the shortened lifespan of the hdd and the loss of data to be expected! hdd model is 40GB seagate st94811A 481 - Philip Seery - 4/15/2004 1:33:57 PM Ridiculously hot. Brand new unit as well. it's quite annoying. 482 - Donald M Dickinson - 4/5/2004 11:40:25 PM My latitude gets warm. Discolored area where left hand rests while typing. Often it hangs up. Often it says insufficient memory available. I have 1.6Ghz Pentium M, 512 K Ram. Often locks up when using MS Word. MS Outlook hangs routinely. I keep all Microsoft updates applied and consistently defragment, etc. Often the mouse pointer will not respond to clicks to select something. Too many problems to mention. I have owned many Dell PC's, and this is the first one that has made me thoroughly disappointed. I strongly discourage anyone from purchasing one. 483 - Bert - 3/31/2004 5:20:52 PM Same heat problem in my case. I8kfanGUI reports HD of 50 degrees when idle. Problem has been becoming worse through time. 484 - Ori - 3/31/2004 8:49:55 AM My D600 palm rest got so hot it went black and had to be changed. Now the underside of my computer (under the memory) gets so hot it will actually cause a skin burn!!! Fix this or else you risk losing many customers. I will seriously consider IBM as my next machine (this is hard to say as I have been working with Dells for well over 6 years). 485 - Bart - 3/27/2004 11:59:17 PM I'm a software developer and using this Dell D600 laptop is very uncomfortable. Previously, I've used a Dell Latitude CSx which didn't have this problem and while the D600 is more powerful in many ways, I now miss the CSx because of the heat problem. Please Dell, fix this. 486 - Mexican - 3/18/2004 1:24:18 AM I am with you. Latitude D600, left side of palmrest heat problem and DELL's support (Gold!!! support) do not nothing for help me 487 - James - 3/8/2004 2:24:25 AM Relying on the recommendation of the Education Service Center I purchased the D600 which upon using for any length of time becomes uncomfortable to use due to the heat on the left palm rest. These are exceedingly uncomfortable computers to use because of that. Otherwise, I love this computer. 488 - Max - 3/6/2004 10:19:58 PM as this is my first time using a laptop, i thought the heat from the left palmrest is a normal thing, after reading through the forums i only realise i am not the only person who is suffering this problem, so please send this to tell and let them know we are suffering!! 489 - Damian Arnold - 3/3/2004 8:19:58 AM This D600 is quite simply the hottest notebook I've ever had! The trouble is I'm not talking about how it runs or how it looks! Come on Dell the bloody thing generates too much heat! I came from a P3-M IBM T23 that I thought was warm running but this D600 takes heat generation to the next level. 490 - Paul Duke - 2/23/2004 5:00:59 PM The palmrest on my D600 is so hot it actually burns my hand. Extremely annoying. I wonder if there are enough of us with this problem to threaten a class action suit. Dell should be replacing these computers. 491 - jeremy - 2/22/2004 10:59:41 AM the laptop is great but far TOO hot, it's unacceptable to work with one of those on lap. this is reccuring problem, as I add a C640 before and the hard drive failed due to overheating (hot environement, no AC :( ) but kindly replaced by dell. One idea would be to make the laptop a bit noisier by changing the fan setting in the bios, and get proper material 'or fans' to dissipate this bl.... heat. 492 - Doug - 2/22/2004 6:44:45 AM I purchased & received my D600 in late June and except for a faulty battery (which was replaced), has been trouble-free. I echo previous sentiments: the D600 is a great machine aside from the heat. The pros of the machine (price, speed, on-site service, looks) outweigh the cons (heat, keyboard) so I have decided to keep it. Yes, I knew of the heat issue before I purchased it. No regrets. 493 - Philly Desai - 2/18/2004 5:23:22 AM Just exactly as above - the machine is great apart from this heat problem, which I find intolerable. 494 - rssb - 2/17/2004 11:00:28 AM I ended up returning the d600 and getting IBM t41, this new one runs cool, neither the bottom nor top . Everything is cool with this. The bad part is they are still selling these systems, i saw one post in the forums, where a person has posted a picture of his discolured palmrest due to sweat ! 495 - Martha Stewart - 2/5/2004 5:42:09 AM The left palm rest heat is a wonderful feature Dell has added. Take a small bird, I like gamehens, wash thoroughly. Salt and pepper to taste. I also like to add a sprig of rosemary - very nice touch! Wrap the bird tightly in foil and lay it on the left palm rest of the Dell Latitude D600 for 35 to 40 minutes. Work diligently on your overdue Powerpoint presentation and in just over a half hour you will complete both dinner and work! Very efficient. Thank you Dell! 496 - Martha Stewart - 2/4/2004 2:51:17 PM The left palm rest heat is a wonderful feature Dell has added. 497 - Brad - 1/31/2004 9:55:46 AM My Left palm rest gets iincredibly hot, I have lost some respect for Dell as prior to this I always associated them with very high quality work. 498 - Jon - 1/15/2004 1:49:14 PM I got a notebook for work, and thought the D600 was about the right size and speed. Too bad it is too hot to use for more than 20 minutes. I want a solution! 499 - Håkon Clausen - 1/13/2004 6:02:26 AM I love my D600, but I can't understand that DELL has done this mistake. I'm about to return my lap becouse of this hot issu 500 - Chris Kossifos - 1/6/2004 11:53:04 PM I purchased this computer through my company, and i love it.... except for the untollerable hot left hand side. My company relies on me for purchase decisions regarding computer equipment. They are all ready to issue a PO to get another 50 or so D600s, but i cannot reccomend this model because of this horrible heat issue. Furthermore, i cannot reccomend Dell notebooks at all, because they have chosen to ignore this very pertinent issue, which is not only physically annoying (maybe dangerous?) but our data is also at risk. Please acknowledge the problem Dell so we can purchase more products from you in the future. 501 - G Sin - 1/5/2004 6:35:14 PM Yep, same here...damn HOT! For those who say it gets "warm". I took the temperature of the palm rest and it read 39 deg C (outside temp 20 deg). This was after 20 min of just having it on (idle). This was AFTER they replaced my HDD and palm rest to incorporate the so called heat shield. I did not take the temp of it without the heat shield though. I now have an IBM T40p and it does prove that you get what you pay for. 502 - Jason Cono - 1/5/2004 4:37:22 PM Had purchased a D600, left palmrest got so hot my hand would sweat! Returned it and got a new unit, and it too had the same problem. Eventually got a refund and bought a Toshiba Tecra M1 and love it!!! 503 - Greg Bontrager - 1/4/2004 9:15:44 PM I have an Inspiron 600m and the left palmrest gets uncomfortably hot. This is my 4th Dell notebook computer (all Inspirons but all different models) and this heat problem will definitely make me reconsider any further Dell notebook computer purchases. I'm disappointed that Dell hasn't acknowledged that this is a problem. 504 - Errol - 1/3/2004 9:11:49 PM I purchased a D600 and recommended it to others based on CNET, PC World, etc. reviews and satisfaction with other Dell products. Once I started using it, I noticed the heat and subsequently found that others were having this problem. I hope Dell does something to resolve this issue. The D600 is a nice machine, but the heat get's annoting quick. 505 - James - 1/1/2004 4:49:03 PM Ordered 2 notebooks because of Dell's reputation, but sent them both back because of this heat issue. Anyone who types on their notebook for an extended period of time (> 1 hour) is likely to get a sweaty palm. Hate to say it, but HP is actually putting out a better notebook right now... 506 - Jose Sandoval - 1/1/2004 4:06:06 PM Daniel wrote on 1/1/2004, "You are all exaggerating." Daniel, I wish we were. Perhaps you don't use the laptop too often, or do not use the laptop the way others use it. I.e. Development laptop with all day typing and heavy use of the hard drive. The heat is not imagined, and I trully like the D600. I wouldn't really complain if there was not issue. But, there is an issue and Dell is not fixing it and there is no ackwnoledgement of it. Read the forumns, do a google search on D600 heat issue, read the entries in this guestbook. We can't all be making this up :) Perhaps your laptop has no issue. And that is a problem also: Why do some laptops have the heat and some don't? I think you were one of the lucky ones... 507 - Professor G. - 1/1/2004 3:27:17 PM My university just bought me a Latitude D600 and I find uncomfortable heat under the left palm, completely unexpected. Also other weird hard drive problems, all seem connected. I noticed two forums on Dell's website that address these issues: D600 Palmrest Heat and "Hardrive Not Found" Error FAQ". 508 - Daniel - 1/1/2004 2:11:12 AM You are all exaggerating. The left palm rest most certainly does NOT get hot. Warm, but certainly not hot. 509 - Marong - 12/31/2003 12:14:47 PM The heat on the left palmrest is big-time! This is only good if you use D600 outside during the winter! The tech/customer support were totally useless as they intentionally ignore this problem. 510 - Felix Lopez - 12/30/2003 12:20:28 AM My dell inspiron 600m gets intolerably hot under the left palm rest. This is ridiculous I feel like taking dell to court this is highway robbery. To make a product that costs more than a thousand and to have it burn your hand everytime is insane! 511 - nariman - 12/28/2003 11:41:57 PM I want to trust Dell and buy D600 as i have a very good experience in Dell Axim X5 PDA, but just this heat problem (and a little bit the touchpad) is worrying me and makes me think about a gateway 200X or Toshiba M30-Q31. I don't like either the 16 bit XGA LCD on gateway or the 15.4' wider and heavier (ough!) Toshiba. I love to have WiFi b/g, bluetooth, 14.1' SXGA 32bit LCD all together, but what can I do? 512 - rssb - 12/27/2003 12:47:44 PM I had this machine, tried to do everything possible in my capability to keep the machine. But dell simply doesnot want to address this problem and they feel everything is alright and still have it in production. As a result had to return this machine and ended up moving to ibm, the amount of time spent in talking to support etc.. plus the loses in shipping ,etc... are worth the satisfaction with the other brands. Dells are good, but these new D-series esp D600, 600m , etc.. are big failures and they should stop selling unless they change the design. 513 - Chaiwat C. - 12/27/2003 11:43:02 AM I am about to order D600 but after reading all the comments about heat problem, I am now have to select otherbrand instead. I think I should also warn all others who are going to purchase D600 that Palmrest Heat is a big problem especially for those using in a warm climate like me living in Thailand !!! 514 - william dowell - 12/25/2003 2:27:24 PM An acknologement from Dell that this is anything but "normal" would be good...Also: dispite many messages in the dell forums, not a single dell moderator has commented...Dreadfull. 515 - James - 12/24/2003 8:10:31 PM Great laptop except for except for the left palm rest getting uncomfortable hot. It is fine for 5 minutes of typing but when try working on it for hours on end; it is just plain unbearable. Many other laptops have the hard drive in the same location as the D600, yet none have been this uncomfortable. Why? I can only imagine how much worse it would be if I had ordered a 5200 rpm drive instead! 516 - Trevor - 12/23/2003 3:34:29 AM It is very hot , especially the place where the left hand rests. If you put the laptop on your lap then it fries your legs ! Not at all comfotable. Dell should do something about it !!! 517 - Angie - 12/22/2003 7:18:50 AM This laptop has two very important issues that need to be addressed. 1. The left palm rest gets way to hot. So hot that it's uncomfortable to type after a period of use. It's just a poor design. Dell engineers need to address this in some way to keep their loyal customers satisfied. I have used Dell laptops for over 7 years and have had 6 of them.. This could be the last one and I work in a company that spends MILLIONS on DELL branded laptops every year. 2. Fix the touchpad. I use Windows XP with the latest updates from MS. It simply locks up and becomes unresponsive for periods of time. Sometimes just works after 10-20 seconds. This needs to be addressed. 518 - Pokai - 12/21/2003 10:53:35 PM I have a d500 and the left palmrest gets uncomfortably hot even after doing low disk intensive tasks like internet surfing. My left palm gets sweaty after 10-20 minutes of use and if I keep my palms on there there's even PAIN! 519 - Kasim - 12/16/2003 6:31:03 PM btw, i thought of this thing since summer but never got the time for it. hehe so Jose its all yours, im too damn lazy to make one myself. one other thing. my notebook is d600 520 - Kasim - 12/16/2003 6:29:14 PM this is hot a FUCK. ibm t40 never had this problem~!! dont say hard drive is at the bottom and makes it hot. IBM's t40's hard drive is located on the right side too~! so Fuck you DELL~!! and fix this piece of shit 521 - K Ship - 12/10/2003 6:42:39 AM Same here hot hot hot!!! 522 - varun gupta - 12/8/2003 7:17:27 AM i own latitude d 600 and i also dont like the heating up of left hand side of it. 523 - Jonas Raabjerg Rasmussen - 12/7/2003 1:18:19 PM Seems to me from the many various posts at the Dell forum that there exists a consistent design flaw in the Latitude D600 series, and that Dell is trying really hard not to admit it, even though they probably know it's there. I also have the D600, actually I've had two over the last 6 months, and they were both too hot on the left palmrest (at least with the original Dell Harddisk drive). 524 - Carey Chenoweth - 12/6/2003 8:30:41 PM Burns my thighs from the heat. Now I can't get the fan to stop even when she is cool. Very strange enviro behavior. Ran some diagnostics say the temp sensor failed, but can't find out what to do about it. 525 - David Liu - 12/3/2003 9:54:37 PM Same problem here. The leftside palmrest is hot whenever the machine is running. 526 - Larry Rymal - 12/3/2003 3:17:02 PM Part of my duties at our Education Service Center is advising what computers to get. Because of the specifications of D600 fitting perfectly our needs, according to DELL'S website, the D600 was the winner---hands down. I have "egg on my face" because the D600s are so uncomfortable to use due to the heat on the left palm rest. These are exceedingly uncomfortable computers to use because of that. Otherwise, I love this computer. 527 - Jose Sandoval - 12/3/2003 8:48:07 AM My Dell Latitude D600 gets way too hot on the left side of the palm rest. Can Dell engineers fix this BIG problem? Or at least officially acknowledge it. Sign the book and as soon as I have around 1000 legitimate entries, I'll pass it to Michael Dell (He's known to listen to his customers). |
